[Sat, Nov 17th] Dyno Day at Mach V

Okay, before I start, let me just say that I know there's a DCMM breakfast that day, and I'm sorry to overlap with that. The schedule just worked out this way, and this event is for all our customers, not just MINI owners.

However, for those of you who might be in the area...

What: Dyno Day

When: 11/17/07, 9am to 5pm

Where: 45064-B Underwood Ln
Sterling, VA 20166

Details:

If you haven't seen us advertise this before, dyno day offers the chance to get a baseline or updated dyno numbers on your car for a smaller fee than on normal workdays. Cost is $75 for 2WD or AWD cars, and $25 additional for air/fuel analysis. Slots are 40 minutes, which is usually enough for 3-4 pulls. (Actually more, if you want...) It's a great social educational event, too, as lots of people come to watch and compare notes.

You can take away your dyno results on a USB key (hint: Bring your own USB key!), so you can store/analyze/post your results to your heart's content.

You must call us at (703) 435-5000 to reserve a slot. Each of our previous dyno days has been sold out, with a wait list. Have your credit card ready to hold your slot.

For further info, if I reserve 3pm dyno time, do I need to be there since the beginning of the session (9am)? I can still show up at 1pm, correct?

You really don't need to be there much earlier than about 10 minutes before your scheduled time. But do plan to hang out, because it's fun.

I'm already known as the "dunce" around here but... what's a dyno? It's a big coil spring thing? Does my car really want that?

Here you go.

A dynamometer, "dyno" or "dyn'r" for short, is a machine used to measure torque and rotational speed (rpm) from which power produced by an engine, motor or other rotating prime mover can be calculated.
A dynamometer can also be used to determine the torque and power required to operate a driven machine such as a pump. In that case, a motoring or driving dynamometer is used. A dynamometer that is designed to be driven is called an absorption or passive Dynamometer. A dynamometer that can either drive or absorb is called a universal or active dynamometer.
In addition to being used to determine the torque or power characteristics of a machine under test (MUT), Dynamometers are employed in a number of other roles. In standard emissions testing cycles such as those defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), dynamometers are used to provide simulated road loading of either the engine (using an engine dynamometer) or full powertrain (using a chassis dynamometer). In fact, beyond simple power and torque measurements, dynamometers can be used as part of a testbed for a variety of engine development activities such as the calibration of engine management controllers, detailed investigations into combustion behavior and tribology.

Yes. The dyno itself costs $80,000, so we have to pay the rent on that. Plus the rent on the building it lives in. Plus the consumables it uses up (air/fuel sensors, brake parts, filter parts) cost. Plus there's the labor involved in running it.
