Image size, rule changed !!!
There is a slightly change to the rule.
We've received few comments from members regarding to the size of the images. Some thought, to reduce the file size might degrade the quality of the images, and some are not comfortable using software to resize the images.
We would like to annouce that we now have accepted full size image in .jpeg format. (at no larger than 10MB/image, please. In casse you have >12 meg pixel camera.
).

THE DEADLINE'S BEEN EXTENDED TO SAT, DECEMBER 8th @ NOON.
We have several images' been submited for the first contest, some of them are really good and some of them are a little off the topic. After discussion, we have agreed that the time is slightly too short for the first one, and even shorter for the December contest, we have decided to extended the deadline to November 8th @ noon est.
There will be two topics altogether:
The first topic still be "DC METRO & MINIs"
Second topic will be announced on NOV 17th @ the breakfast meet.
For members who have already submited and think that the image(s) might not go well with the topic, please feel free to resubmit image (s).
Good luck and happy shooting.

The second topic will be annouced at the breakfast meet on Saturday.
I need a quick clarification on this statement from the rules: "must retain an appearance that it was captured on camera. (No abstract editing)"
And, by what criteria will the photographs be judged?
And, by what criteria will the photographs be judged?
Take the pictures like you're shooting slides (transparency films).
We allow minor tweak that will enhance (not manipulate) the images , for example: Cropping, color correcting, sharpening, contrast adjustment, minor clean up such as a bird in the sky, a bird poop on the bonnet, not something like remove the whole telephone pole or cloning something into the image.
Monochrome, Black & white or sepia, conversion are allowed.
In the future, we might have a "Digital Art" catogory added into the contest.

Yes, it will be by poll here.
If there are more than 10 images being submitted, we will cut it down to 10 finalists.
It is important to use the topic to help create the idea.
Especially, if we have more than 10, the topic will come into play in order to judge which images will make the cut to be the 10 finalists.

Any good books out there you would advise a novice digital photographer to get ? Up till now I've been winging it, I have no real experience with any software either..........but I want too..

) and Magic Lantern book (for your Camera model) by Moose Peterson. For me, I believe that it is very important to understand the equipment and know of what they capable of. Learn to know your equipment like your own hands.
Then select your style of photography, go to book stores and look through photography books in the catogory that you like, once you find one of two that you like (1 or 2), keep looking over and over and that will train your way of looking things.
I admire the works of Robert Capa and Elliott Ewritt, especially Ewrritt's, I always love to spend hours on his pictures. I was enjoyed the "Life" magazine (I wish the magazine was still around), the National Geographic is always be my favorite.
Actually, I'm thinking about an afternoon tea meet someday for a photographic discussion. Let me know if you like the idea.

Maybe..... this Sunday afternoon @ Barne & Noble.

In addition to the books, if you happen to have a Nikon camera this site is useful...
http://www.nikondigitutor.com/index_eng.html
I'm sure the other camera companies have something simular. I happen to have a Nikon so I know where this one is.
I got a lot of help at home I had an older book on film photography. Many of the rules are the same. Rules of composition are the same for pictures be they paint, film or digital so there are golden nugguts to be found in a lot of places. When I get home I will look for the book.

Also National Geographic Field Guide to XXXXXX and other photography books from National Geographic are very good as well.
