KUMHO V710 question...

Hi all,

For an '05 MCS in GS, my understanding is you have to run a 'stock' rim size, meaning 16x6.5.

Looking at the KUMHO V710, in 215/40-16, the specified minimum rim size is 7".

So... Is anyone running the V710 on 16x6.5 rims? Is this rim too small?

We just passed break-in on our MCS this Saturday and ran the car for the first time. Whoee, but it's a fun little car, but we quickly found the limits of the performance runflats.

We're shopping for race rubber, and I'm looking at the V710(215/40-16), V700(205/45-16), and Victoracer(??). Keep in mind we're on a budget.

What is the tire recommendation for a stock 16x6.5" rim?

Thanks,

The hot setup right now is the 710 on 16" wheel. It fits. It's a ***** to mount. It lasts far longer than the Hoosier. Good luck finding any. Everyone seems to be sold out.

Just to clarify...

So you are saying that the 215/40-16 is fine on a 16x6.5" rim?

We may be fine waiting... We're already 2/3 the way through the season here anyway, so it's not like it'll make a difference this season. My wife 'FlyinGrape' is running the car and has been running my commuter Neon up till now this season to stay in class when the MINI arrived. She'll probably just keep running on the performance runflats the rest of the year to get used to driving it (only 4 more events for her this year anyway).

Next season will be a different story though..

Thanks,

Ripley

This past weekend at the Cendiv Divisional Championship at Peru, John and Angie Rogers used 225/50 x 16 Avon Tech-R tires on stock 16" x 6.5" rims. THEY LOOKED HUGE!!! I wish I took a picture for you to see them and the expressions on the other G-stock competitors faces . It worked for Angie. She won and they didn't fly off the rims. John mention that it took the right combination of wheel spacers and camber adjustments to just fit with minor rubbing on the inner fender liner.

PS. Congrats to Oasis Tan on his decisive victory. You were quick indeed.

Ripley, YES, that is indeed what we're saying. So it makes you feel more comfortable, EVERYbody runs much larger tires than the recommended width. In fact, I've seen 225/50R14's on 5" (that's right, FIVE inch) wheels.

You just have to have a good shop that knows what they're doing. Particularly the Kumhos, because of the stiff sidewalls, are difficult to mount.

But yes, put your order in now for those Kumhos, some people aren't going to Nationals because they can't get a set...

For the budget minded

I know that the V710's are the BEST (they stick and stick and stick). I just don't want to drop $171 per tire. I used to run the Falken Azenis on my Miata and they were great for the money $50 per tire. You won't win nationals but will get a season or 2 of good running. We ran a set with threee drivers one season and the held up. Falken has come out with a slightly more aggressive and more expensive version. I might give them (Falken) a shot again as I have been with them for 3 previous sets.

$89 per tire

That's a choice you have to make, but I can tell you, the Kumhos last a LONG time, especially if you don't care about being slower to people due to the tires.

The Kumhos will give you a solid 50-60 runs of stick, plus, I have yet to even see one corded (unless you severly overheat them and don't spray them AND continue to run them). They'll probably go to a good 100+ runs since you don't care about being the fastest. They'll simply get harder with every heat cycle, every tire does...

The point is this, if you are simply doing it for fun and don't care about being competitive, run a street tire. Heck, some $25 all seasons may last longer than the Falkens....where do you want to draw the line?
But, if you want to see how competitive you can really be and not say "I could be faster IF I was on R Compounds", the V710 is a great tire and will last quite awhile.
BTW, they're $154 from Tire Rack...

Good Luck!
Brian
