Anyone running 215/55-17 or 225/50-17 on stock 17" rims?
 

Has anyone run 215/55-17 or 225/50-17 tires on the stock Countryman 17" rims yet?

Any tire interference issues?

I am looking at swapping out the OEM run-flats, probably on the way back home from the dealer -- the car should arrive shortly before X-Mas!

Hi Steve: I'm running 215/55 17's for my winter set up: Bridgestone Blizzak ws-70's on stock oem's (I run 18's in the summer). I have about 700 miles on them so far and no interference issues :thumbsup: I can't wait to switch over to 18" summer non-runflats as well come May.

I'm running 225\50ZR17 Pirelli PZero Neros and just did a test for another post....
Did the parking lot test, as tight as it would let me turn the wheel and no rubbing...

The road to and from location today is hilly with extreme turns, handling was very nice, was in sport mode....

Had it on the highway yesterday, got it up close to 100 mph and nothing expanded to rub anything, is a wonderful ride....

The tires say light snow but haven't encountered any yet and only had them on for a week so no wet road tests...but I can say, dry roads, these tires stick extremely well.

Thanks for the reports so far...I am leaning towards the 225/50-17's as they are identical in Diameter to the stockers, just a bit wider. Lots of choices with either size compared to the stock 205/55's.

I am undecided on what tire(s) to go with, but need a all-around all-season tire that will handle dry & hot and cold & wet.

Hopefully I will be able to unload the stock run-flats (we ordered the all-season one's - not sure what will be fitted), someone posted that Discount Tire gave them a pretty good deal on their old run-flat take-offs.

I'm running 225/50/17 for winter tires as well. No rubbing issues.

Ok, had them on some wet roads..... I tried to break them free but they wouldn't...

And I have to say, I really am enjoying getting rid of those "Flinstone" ride and handling run flats.... That alone is worth it, no matter what NON run flats you choose....

I ordered my non-RF's yesterday from tirerack.com. They should be here in a couple of days and my car is still somewhere out in the Atlantic ocean! This is the first time I have ever bought tires for a car I didn't even own yet. Think I'm anxious to get rid of the RF's? :)

@fused - I had PZero Nero's A/S on my G20 and they were great on dry/wet and decent in snow for all seasons. They wear pretty fast though

@stevepsd - I just put on 225/50R17 Michelin X-Ice Xi2's on a 17x8 rim and they just fit..

I just installed 215/55/17 Kumho 4x KU22 on Wini the other day. I gotta say I like the look with the slightly bigger and taller tire. The Speedometer is closer to being more accurate(about 1mph off still) will see how well they work in the snow as soon as it does. The 4X seems like a good tire so far. Handles like the Summer RFT I took off.

Although this thread is a little old, I'd thought I'd ask how happy people are with switching to the 225x50-17 tire size (NRF). There are times when my 205x55-17 Continental ContiProContact SSRs (RF) feel just fine. And then I drive somewhere with a few bumps or coarse pavement. The worst was a trip up I-476 from Philly to Allentown. Conversation with people in the back seat was hard as the car and tires were so loud. The ride quality could not be called 'premium' either.

My 2005 Legacy GT with 225x45-17's was smoother and quieter, so I am thinking most of the issue is the hard sidewall of the run flat and the tread design.

I have read glowing reviews of the Bridgestone RE970 AS performance all seasons and they do come in 225x50-17 also. So far I am leaning toward this tire as a replacement.

Everyone still happy with the 225's?

I ran a 215/55 17 on stock wheels for winter last year, they seemed fine and no rubbing, as far as I can tell.

Put on the 215/55 R17 on the stock rims and it is a huge improvement over the stock run flats. Better ride, handling and quieter. Put on the Kumho 4x. No rubbing and the speedometer is now right on the money.

I too am ready to offload the RF's and look forward to a smoother ride. The independent BMW/Mini repair shop I go to (out of free maintenance period at 44K) told me that Toyo Proxes 4 plus are what they put on their personal Minis. They don't come in 205 55 17's that are stock size but they have 215 50 17's, which are 1/4 inch wider I am told. I haven't seen much at all in the forums on these tires, which seem to have been around since at least 2012. Any advice out there? Mine is a daily driver in the Seattle area with very little snow and barely ever gets below 20 degrees in the winter. I do drive rather aggressively in the corners at times, but nothing crazy. Thanks for anything you can tell me.

225/55R17 No rubbing. They fill Wheel wells pretty good. Different car after ditching RFT

Is this on 17x7 OEM rim?

Still no issues?

For 225 tires wheel width is from 6.0" to 8.0" . 17x7" is just in the middle of the range, not to mention 225/55 and small kids don't look like bobble head toys

Should I go 215 or 225 and which brand?
 

Hi mini owners. I just put on great michelins on my mcs and saved a bundle while improving every aspect of our ride. We now will need two new tires for our countryman once it gets back from the shop from having it's Turbo replaced.

So question one. Which size to increase our choices, 215 or 225 and why is one preferred over the other?

Question two. Which brand is preferred?

And finally. Right now it has stock rfs. Put those the best two on the back and replace with non rf in front or do all 4 new and sell the still two good 2 on cl?

So, I'm guessing 225/45/17s will fit well with no problems? I'm replacing the Pirelli RFs with BF Goodrich Sport Comp-2s next week.

I have Dunlop dz101's in 225/45r17. They fit with no issues and are the exact same diameter as stock. They have a wider footprint and make the car look more aggressive.

Just put these on yesterday for the solo season. 235/45r17 Hankook rs3. Took them to the bus parking lot near the house and I am already impressed with their grip.

Yep, got the 225/45/17 BF Goodrich Sport Comp 2s installed yesterday. First off, the ride is WAYYY better than the RFs. Second, as you can see, 17" wheels look wayyyy too small on there, I need to upgrade to some 18"s soon. #mindthegap

225/45/17 is actually a bit smaller than stock - about an inch in diameter. I would have gone 225/50/17, which would given you the same diameter as the stock 205/55/17.
