What does a pulley do? Do I need it? How do I make my exhaust roar?

What does a pulley do? Do I need it? How do I make my exhaust roar?

Hey there folks,

I've had my 06 MC about a month now and I constantly hearing talk of pulley's. Now granted I'm not a racer as I do a mix of highway and street driving to go to work with my very conservative wife in tow, so how does a pulley add to the driving experience? Do I need it? Also how do I make my exhaust roar like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9mId...related&search=

I am looking to find ways to have more fun without costly modifications...

Thanks,

Queto

A (smaller) pulley spins the supercharger faster, providing more boost and more go. Do you need it? No. Do you want it?
To get your exhaust to 'roar' you'd need a different exhaust.

I dont think I have a supercharger as I have the base model. And does a pulley use more gas? What kind of exhaust do you reccommend?

The really cheap way to get more roar out of that MC exhaust is to punch a couple holes in your muffler j/k Don't worry bout the pulley you are correct about no supercharger on your MC

Most exhaust "roar" or the "lawnmower sound effect" has nothing to do with performance. Its closer to having your car fart loudly as you drive down the road. Sure it makes people notice you.. but for all the wrong reasons.

If you have a Cooper, and not a Cooper S, then the pulley is not an option for you (ok, you could buy it, and it looks pretty, but it won't help the car. ) Adding a pulley is likely to induce one to use more gas.

As for exhaust recommendations, try the Performance Mods :: Cooper (non S) forum.

Ahhh, well, if you don't have a supercharger you can stop worring about a pulley. The pulley is the part that turns the supercharger. Replacing the stock pulley with a smaller pulley turns the supercharger faster (more boost). No super charger - no pulley.

I would never say something like that on this fourm, but I have thought it many, many times.

Imo...that exhaust sound is HORRIBLE. But to each their own. I would also suggest using the search function and using titles such as MC exhaust, etc. and using the non-s performance section.

Happy motoring!

This tread is moved from Performance Mods:Drivetrain to Perf Mods: Cooper (non S).

When you hear of any mods most of the time it will apply to both MC and MCS but if it has to do with the engine then in a Cooper S you have some additional parts which add more power (intercooler, supercharger) and there are some other parts that are not interchangable between MC and MCS like the air intakes or cat back exhausts (each has it's own version).

The roar of an exhaust and how it sounds to you is mostly subjective. For the MC there are many good choices. If you can find an MC with the Helix13 exhaust then go for a ride- the exhaust note is quite strong without being objectionable to most people.

If you want to have fun you need to learn how to drive a performance car. Driving school is always your best investment as it involves no costly modifications to your car and the skill you learn will carry over no matter which car you drive for the rest of your life (just don't loose your skill by practicing everyday to be smoother).

Unless you grew up doing racing it's likely that you are self taught in driving. Driver's ed and street driving is not performance driving. Your MINI has a very large capability for going fast especially around corners but most owners have no idea how to do this efficiently and safely, being in control at all times.

There is a forum on Driving schools. Your local MINI club or BMW club may know of driving schools in your area. A skilled instructor can often drive a stock MC faster or just as fast as a modified MCS.

For an exhaust for the MC check this out-
http://www.motoringfile.com/2004/09/...sprint_exhaust
Or look up the review for the remus exhaust.

had an MC...now an MCS...observations

I was taught to drive at a porsche school years ago (Not that i am good mind you) but I found that I had to "work" with the MC more to make it keep up with the MCS autos...Took a bit more skill with the MC but it was also sweet...

Just had to spend the extra $$$ to hear that supercharger whine that I missed so much...add a stiffer suspension and exhaust (Milltech Catback) and I am a happy camper!

Ditto on the intake. great sound, MUCH cheaper and easier to install than an exhaust.

Using more gas

Boy are you right...Put a 15% alta reduction pulley on my 04...I just cannot keep my foot out of it...along with my hand on the Chevron Credit card!

Thing really pulls and am down about 6 mpg (after the ECU adjusted for the change I believe) I had also added a milltech exhaust at about the same time!

Rice!

Like you I think that sounds like typical RICE!!! Yuk

At least the Milltech is refined...and IMHO, Less backflow pressure = better performance...not about the noise for me...at least I do not drone down the hwy!
