plasti-dip my roof?!?! Am I crazy??

Ok, so my roof is white, I want it black, and im extremely cheap, thinking of masking off my sunroof and plasti-dipping it. Can anyone think of any reason not to do this? or any tricky spots?

R53_MCS 09-24-2010 12:52 PM

If you have a sunroof it won't look horrible but if you don't have one it will come out splotchy. I wouldn't do it either way.

Well, if you flip over, the car wont slide as far.

Hmm, I dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing . . .

MINIdave 09-24-2010 03:03 PM

Always time and money to do it over but never time to do it right......

Why would you do this? Just so you can watch it peel off again a few days later?

You can do this without spending a lot of money and get a quality job, but it's a LOT of work, and I get the impression you just want to go out there and spray it with something and have it be done.

So if you want a quality job there are folks here who can give you a step by step, but if you just want to do it in 10 minutes, you're on your own there...

BMU2MINI 09-24-2010 03:04 PM

Lol, if I get in a wreck, and flip my mini, you're going to feel terrible lol

Awwww man, you got me, I do want to have it done, and no, I don't have the money to get it done right. I've done a lot of plasti-dip to my car, like headlight rings, grille slats, etc.and I don't think it will peel, none of my previous work has even started to peel.

MotorMouth 09-24-2010 03:16 PM

several rolls of electrical tape should work. easier to replace when they start coming off too.

Capt_bj 09-24-2010 03:28 PM

an uncle of mine repainted his pickup with a gallon of latex and a roller

it's a look . . .

do it - you'll become a plasti-dip poster child.

Yeah.ThatsRice. 09-24-2010 03:39 PM

Yeah, but your roof is exposed to the sun whenever your car is outside. Live and learn, I guess.

Herleman 09-24-2010 04:41 PM

"Am I crazy??"

Yes. Sure is going to be hard to make it an even thickness over that large an area. But I guess it will just peel off if it doesn't go well. Gonna need lots of plasti-dip.

(I'm resisting the obvious comment about wanting to be there when you are turning it upside down to dip it.)

BMU2MINI 09-24-2010 05:42 PM

I've had a lot of success with lots of thin coats from the aerosol type

BMU2MINI 09-24-2010 05:51 PM

So far, what im worried about its it's going to get cold here this coming month, so I think it night shrink and crack, guess I will see

dragonflyer 09-24-2010 06:17 PM

Just get Matte Black vinyl. It would cost you about$200 to do the install your self and will give you 10 years out door.

MI MINI S 09-24-2010 06:43 PM

Matte Black vinyl is the way to go. It will look great and if you don't like it just remove it.

drewstermalloy 09-24-2010 11:29 PM

Assuming you'll need like 3 cans, you'll spend like $20 on the stuff. If it peels off, who cares? Take your time and just do it until you get the money to get it done right. It won't harm your car, if you want it off it'll take less time to get it off than it did to spray on.

Not sure what has happend with the PD company but my last few projects were nothing like what it used to be.

Could be the nozzel vendor for the company is different now, but I had such uneven look from two new cans purchased. Finish was smooth in some areas and rough in others.....I tested it against an old can I had and the difference of spray pattern and amount being sprayed was like night and day.

Older can of PD worked much better and had an even finish and smoother coat.:sly:

It will look splotchy. there was a guy on here that did it before.

Id just find a place and get some vinyl put up there... still decently cheap

This isnt mine, its s00perc00per's who said:I plasti-dipped mine as well, it took me 2-3 cans. IMHO it looks like ass. It was supposed to be temporary so i could save for a vinyl roof, but be able to buy my black rims. Plasti-dip is a miracle paint for small stuff, or odd shaped things, but the roof is a little to big and flat for it. dont get me wrong, it works, and it has stuck for about 8 months now, but some parts are smooth, some are rough and its hard to wash. Not to mention, its totally noticeable. Every MINI meet ive ever gone to someone has touched it and "inspected it."

I can think of one...

It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of!

Exactly why would anyone want to plastidip their roof? If you want it black, at least sand it, mask it off and spray paint it black.

I'm sorry but that's beyond a mod that just because I don't like it, it's stupid... it really is stupid.
:eek2:

A sheet of vinyl would be better and just as cheap. Easy to put on and easy to remove. That plastidip stuff looks terrible, it looks faded out and cheap.

HWY129 10-02-2010 09:23 AM

I love plasti-dip for blacking out chrome, but I am not sure how it will work on that large of an area. I do think you will have some issues trying to wash it, but if you take your time and do it right, I don't think peeling and cracking will be much of an issue. I did both scoops on my MINIs a year ago and have had no problems with either. Personally, I think the vinyl is a better option for a longer term fix.

BMU2MINI 02-19-2011 05:52 PM

Wow, some serious guys out there. Lol, I wouldn't necessarily say it's stupid or all that, of course it's going to look cheap, I said it would be cheap and temporary hahaha. But it would tone down the giant splotch of white, when nothing else is white on my car hahaha.

BMU2MINI 02-19-2011 05:52 PM

Either way, I didn't do it. No time to do much of anything, preparing for an upcoming deployment. See you all on the other side!

Herleman 02-19-2011 06:15 PM

You keep your head down man -- get your rear back here in one piece. We have far to few Mini crazies out there. Semper Fi.

BMU2MINI 02-20-2011 07:53 AM
