Air Intake for R56
 
Hey guys,

does anyone have an idea where i can get an Intake for my Mini??
Its an 2008 R56 Non-S
ive looked at mossmini.com and minimania.com.... Nothing

please lemme kno asap

Check the non-S modifications section of this site. There are tons of threads. There are really only 2 "CAIs" being made now but a lot of DIY ones.

For R56 MINI's I love the DIY open cone. Put one on my baby and am very happy with it. Cost me a total of $33 from the local Pepboys. On the highway I get about 2-4 MPG better, but the best part it the sound it makes. When you give it throttle it makes the most sexy, deep grumble. Here's a clip of me accelerating, no other mods http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX4uZoi_pq8. I've also feel like the car pulls a little harder in higher RPMs (makes a cool whooshing sound too).

Basically you remove everything right of the mass airflow sensor and replace it with a cone filter. Here is a picture exactly like mine (thanks to OXYBLUECOOP) My filter is the Spectre 8132, you can get it from most local autopart stores. It sqeezed right on... :)

Let me know if you have any questions! I felt rather confused when I was going to do mine, hope this can help you out. It ended up being much more simple than I thought.

I ordered the AIRVIP2 and should be getting delivered today by UPS. I'll check back with results after its installed.

I installed the Air VIP2 kit last night with the K&N air filter. It was a very simple project, 30 minutes including opening the boxes, packaging and test drive.
First thoughts.. No difference. Quiet and Unobstrusive.
Then I got on it. You really hear the difference above 3k RPM.
It definitely pulls smoother between 5k-6k RPM.
Don't get me wrong, I think I expected it to be louder and maybe feel a HP difference, It wasn't and didn't.
The change is subtle but you do get a better growl above 3k RPM.
Best of all, my wife will probably never notice there is anything different since she never shifts thru the gears on the automatic.
In a nutshell, better sound easy to install.

Hey tmo8462... Can you report on your MagnaFlow CatBack Exhaust? How does it sound? any real performance gain? Where did you get it from?

Gonzoe to be honest i havent really noticed a performance gain just yet. But Im still not all the way complete with it as well. I still have to install the rest of the piping when our hobby shop on base out here opens back up. I dont want to put it on without having a car lift so i can actually work under the car. But I cut the OEM piping and used 2 1/4 piping that I purchased from AutoZone. Using a 1 7/8ths (OEM piping size)to 2 1/4 adapter coupling I will be cutting out the 2nd Cat and the Resonator to make a straight pipe back from the 1st hanger spot(about a foot behind where it hooks up to the header). Right now I cut off the OEM muffler, due to getting tired of not being able to see how it looks and sounds on my car and it sitting in my front room looking at me in the face. So far the sound that it puts out is a nice roar, unlike most round muffler cans that are put on say honda's and such. So no angry bee-hive sound. As soon as i get the rest of the piping done im going to do a sound check and will post it up on here. I dont want to do it as of just yet so that im not putting out an unfinished mod. And yes I know ordering parts from Autozone might be a sin, well for mods it is but at least i went with something that has a good back ground and not something that is ricey. If you want to know anything else just PM me. Trying to keep this more of a intake section.

Oh and at 1st i really didnt notice a sound difference, but my buddy, who i helped put his Riss racing exhaust on said he noticed one as soon as he heard it. Now that the muffler is broken in I can hear it quite well even while just cruising in 6th gear and staying under 3k RPM's. Im sure that the actual performance gain will be noticeable once i take out the restricting of the cat and resonator.

I was thinking about buying the VIP2 but choose not to due to it only taking out the CAI muffler...... Looks nice but I wanted to do my own. since no one other than VIP put one out at the time. Look into buying the DDM Works as well. Im kinda curious if the two might link up. If so, I would be on top of buying both!

What do you think of your DDM so far? Worth the money? I like the idea of this intake, but like the $$ side of the $33 pepboys run. Any real gain one way or another?

It did show a gain on the dyno i cannot remember the numbers we did several pulls with different combs. Way from way motor works should still have the dyno numbers.

I can't really tell, but does the filter attach directly to the intake line and just stick out into the box? If so couldn't you leave the top off for more air flow? I would like an open cone, but this way I could still get some cool air from the front grill as well.

jbewley, IMO to give you a little on it the maf bolts onto the side of the box with the filter onto it on the inside of the box. So it would seem like it would possible to take the top off for more air flow. I don't have the DDM but just looking at the pictures of it this is what I would put together of how it works.

TMO8462, thanks and that is what I thought I saw as well. I was just trying to confirm, as I might go thist route.

Are there any non-oil based cone type filters that would work with this intake on a Justa? Ex. JCW OEM filter, etc....
