Justa Cooper CAI
Ok, so I have done quite a lot of searching and come up with a few options for what I am looking for. I am mainly interested in getting the engine louder, but a few extra horses can't hurt either
the VIP AIR 2 - Some people says it adds a lot of difference, some say none at all. VIP says it adds eight horses and a nice sound. But it is pretty pricey for just a metal tube, and even more so if you get the K&N air filter that they recommend. Here is the link to VIP's Web Site: http://vipcustomparts.com/minicooperparts.htm
The second option is the K&N Apollo Intake. From what I have heard the sound is not that great and the hose it pretty flimsy. http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=60240
The third option is the duct tape method. I read on here that if you tape the holes in the muffler next to the air filter housing it makes it louder and gives you a little more power. I tried this and 1. was not very impressed at all, I didn't notice any difference, and 2. don't like the fact that I have duct taped anything in my car. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-silencer.html
The Fourth is the Open Cone Filter. I have seem Oxybluecoop's set up and his is very nice. I like this method the best, mainly because I have read it is the loudest. However I am not sure exactly how to do this one. I know you would take out the muffler, air filter housing, and the hose that connects from the grill to the muffler. After that I am lost. I know I need a cone filter with a diameter of 2 3/4. But past that I don't no if i need anything else. Can I just attach it to the hose that connected to the air filter housing? What do i secure the cone filter with? Here is a diagram of the set up:
Here is Oxybluecoops set up:
Here is a filter I have read might fit: http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=RC-9310

Sorry for the monster post. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Attach the filter to the MAF like in the photo you have above. Also, in the picture you have above, the filter is just resting on the top of the engine. You can make your own bracket (on the 2nd page of your last link) to make it a little better.
PM me if you have any other questions, I've tried a few different methods and can pretty much tear down/reconstruct the OEM setup with my eyes closed.

I have used the K&N Apollo kit for a couple of months now and I have just changed my Cooper to the stock intake waiting for the air vip 2 and a itg pro filter http://www.lohen.co.uk/shop/proddeta...gprofiltergen2
The K&N Apollo is ok. I feelt some increase in power on the lower revs and better sound than the stock intake. But the Apollo's intakehose really sucks and I'm unsure whether I quite appreciate the quality of it. So im holding my thumbs for the airvip2 and a itg filter.

Look closely, it is a modified (hoses) Apollo.

I would go with a Intake tubing. You can go to any local autoparts store around you, I.E. Pepboys or Autozone and purchase one. Attach it to your MAF with a Coupler then attach the filter to the end of the tubing. Be sure to remove all the OEM CAI, including the Airbox & filter, the silencer box and tubing leading to the headlight/grill. take a look at mine and PM me is you have any other questions. I went with this and have had good results so far. It has a good deep sound and have noticed a little gain in HP, maybe 5. I've changed filters twice now and will probably change it again to find the right one that I like. But for now there are none that are actually made for 2nd Gen. that I like.

did a sound check on it not to long ago, this is the 2nd filter. the 1st was a K&N.

We talked to one of our Intake manufactures yesterday and should have the R56 Cooper intake available next week. We've had a prototype for months that we intalled and dyno tested that worked well, and sounded Fantastic. Keep an eye out we'll be announcing it soon.

Just saw the design. Although it looks clean, and 8lbs tq sounds nice, it's not what I was really expecting. It still uses the air "muffler" (even though it's an easy delete), which I'm surprised wasn't taken out since VIP claims such a huge gain with the pipe. I think a better design for DDM would have been to create the new filter housing along with a bent pipe to delete the muffler. I don't know if I'm going to be shellin' out 250 bucks for something like that. But I do respect the fact that after almost 4 years of the R56, someone FINALLY took the time to design something nice for us Cooper owners.

I have to agree at least someone made one finally.

I believe the VIP2 has notches like the OEM air muffler does so it fits tightly to the filter housing. I don't think that rubber coupler that comes with the DDM would fit over the notches, unless you hacked them off.
It's not a big deal though, you could probably get someone to measure and mandrel bend you a pipe cheaper than it would cost to buy the VIP pipe.
Overall I'm just not impressed enough to drop $250 on the DDM. I feel like they didn't exactly finish it.

Im with you drew.....looking at the VIP2 it might not work but you can usually stretch the couplers over the ridge. but like you, im not going to put out the $250 for it. I've got one already in mine that i custom ordered myself so i'll stick with it till something i feel will be better comes out. mine was only $45 for the tubing and put out about $90 for two filters and im happy with the out come i have.
