K&N Apollo Air Induction
#2
I'm curious too...
I've read many post on the internet about modifying the non-s MINI Cooper air intake. Some say modifying the air intake will do nothing. Others say it will increase horse power and torque by "a lot." Does anyone here have the straight story? The K& N Apollo seems like an easy install and if it will increase power a little, it might be a good addition and worth the price. Regards.

emagers,
I installed a K&N Typhoon bought from Parts America for good price and easy install for my 2003 non-s. Maybe 1 or 2 MPG increase and slight improved pickup. What I like the best is getting rid of the effective stock bug and leaf catcher, and making more room under hood. Easy to clean the K& N filter.

Hmmm. Forgive me, but I really know nothing about how intake mods work. Why does increased air flow lead to lower MPG? Is there a subconscious tendancy to have a heavier foot and drive harder after such mods?

Just fitted K&N intake, and did before-&-after comparisons - see separate thread in this forum. Fuel consumption test: about 10 miles with cruise control set on 50mph, 4th gear, same hilly windy road. much the same weather on the same day. About 4% better fuel consumption. In normal driving, the car pulls one gear higher up most slopes and hills, so that could improve consumption further.
(Performance: 6% better accelerating 1400-2000rpm in 6th, 13% better 4000rpm to redline in 2nd, about 3% slower 2000-4000rpm. Noiser above 2000rpm, especially in the 2000-4000rpm range.
Installation: I'm no mechanic but installed it no problem in an hour or two. The K&N instruction sheet (also on web site) is good, and just follow the steps exactly.
