Calling all classic experts..... 1991 Monte Carlo edition Mini???? Pics inside

Hi Guys, Can anyone shed any light on this particular Mini model? All the info I have is it's a Japan import 1991 Rover Mini, supposedly 1 of only 75 made and only 20 converitbles? Here's some pics:

That's just awesome looking! The fender flares are kind of reminiscent of 30's and 40's cars.

Urggghhhh. Thats one UGLY car.

If it was a Japanese import why is it left hand drive? Japanese cars are all RHD......

I was wondering the same thing... it has AC as well, right? If not... well, it's still a bit funky-looking, but a convertible Mini IS pretty rare. I'll need to check the Rees book though - 1991 sounds too early for a convertible, but I may be wrong.

That is an aftermarket conversion NOT an OEM factory car.

Austin. Morris, Rover even British Leyland, would never have contrived such a dogs breakfast of a car.

They certainly wouldn't have tooled up for a production run of 75 cars either.

Hey ImagoX no Worries, it's not my car nor am I thinking of buying, I'd never seen it before and was just curious. We get a lot of Japan import vehicles older than 15 years here in Canada but 99% of the euro ie BMW, ferrari, Alfa etc are LHD's, but all the Japanese likes Skylines and Toyota landcrusiers etc are RHD's

I have pictures of a black Monte Carlo cabriolet with the same body kit that I took in Amsterdam a few years ago. I posted a pic on NAM a year ago and got the same response. Pretty FUGLY. The one I photographed was LHD and auto. trans.

Here's one of the snapshots I took of the Amsterdam car. Sorry, I don't have more info.
on these. Based on what I've read in the Chris Reese book, there were a limited number of
Rover cabriolets and these are not them. I don't know what company made or makes these
conversions, but it is odd that the white one came from Japan, with the LHD. Maybe it was
converted from RHD, which is relatively simple. I like the idea of a classic mini convertible, but
based on what I've read, I wouldn't consider a conversion. Chopping the top off a paper-thin
tin can creates a huge loss in structural strength. If I were to gamble with one, I'd go with
factory cabrio.

Right... they would create something striking, like the Clubman!

The Clubman was sublime compared to the Austin Allegro

Have you ever driven a convertible? I haven't, but I'm guessing even the 200 or so factory Rovers are a bit soft/spongy. I can't imagine the flex in one of these chopped numbers.

Anyone out there own a factory 'vert? What's it like?

bwah! Austin Allegro! My uncle had one of those in England. Thanks dimini for the pic of the black one obviously there is some legitimacy to the series.
