I think its more fun to drive without the syncros. It gives you an excuse to double clutch. Mine are pretty much shot.

I'd take it to a real transmission shop, not one of those places that just drops rebuilds in. The guy I go to takes the car out for a ride around the block and can give you a real good idea of whats wrong right away. Maybe all it needs is a good flush to clean out buildup.

There are a few mechanics that specialize in British cars and work on MGBs and Triumphs all day. You may want to check with one of those guys, they may have even have already worked on one.

Hey rskotl,

You might get better info/response to your question if you post a new thread specifically mentioning transmission questions. This thread is a hodgepodge of fun and nonsense, which might not be read by those capable of best answers to your techinical questions. I think your '96 model already has a tall fourth gear, good for 70mph, but I haven't a clue how difficult a DIY on 1st/2nd synchros would be. Also, the minimania forum has lots of technical discussions.

Haven't had a chance to check out the wheels yet. Been up to my neck in non-MINImini family matters ranging from funerals to newborns--all within two week's time.

I dont know how hard it is to "do it yourself"? I would like to have the car down for as little time as possible. I was looking at MiniMania for tranny's and figure Ill be spending about a $1000, roughly. For a "daily driver" in germany, no long trips or anything( thats what the 07 is for) what kind of final gear should I go for? If I bought a new/refurbished tranny how hard is it to drop out and throw back in? Im pretty mechanically inclined but Ive always dealt with American Muscle cars, mainly automatics.

My main questions are, is it worth it to just take it to a shop even though its going to cost an arm and a leg? How hard is a tranny swap for someone to do themself?

Thanks for any help!
You can do this yourself, it's not that hard especially if you're just gonna do a swap. You will have to pull the motor, and you will need the special tool to remove the clutch and the flywheel, other than that it's just nuts and bolts.
Buy a good manual first, I recommend the Bentley, it's only $60 and it's just about as good as a factory manual.
