Speaker housings w/ door pockets for later classic Minis
 

I ran across this thread over at TheMiniForum.co.uk, and I thought I'd put it up here in case it helps someone...

I was looking for a way to add door speakers to my classic, and a user over there developed plans for an external-mount box that not only allows you to mount the speaker but that ALSO gives you back the missing door pocket that was available in earlier Minis (wihout roll-down glass:

CLICK HERE for the plans in .zip format. the zip folder includes basic instructions as well as schematics (measured in millimeters) for all componants. There are also schematics for an under-seat panel that can be used to mount speakers under the rear seats as well as a shelf of the rear deck.

You can actually find the door pockets with speakers from Rover. The only problem I heard of is that the speakers are so small that they are almost pointless. I have been looking into a solution for a looooong time, but I have all but given up. If you make one, post up some pics so that we can see how it looks. :thumbsup:

The MDF (medium density fiber board) that these are made of is only like $16 for a ginormous sheet... looks like enough for at least two if not three sets. Since I can't get a partial sheet, I think I'll make as many of these as possible from a single sheet, then sell the extras to whoever wants them. I probably won't cover them with material - after all, everyone will probably want something different - but just being able to get the unfinished boxes would be a help to some people, I bet. :thumbsup:

I'm going to make a cardboard mock-up first, just to see how it looks, but I think these will be GREAT.

Yeah, but I don't want to put in a full dash...

Given that my car has never had a stereo, so there's no place to run wires (shy of drilling holes anyway), I'm thinking of doing something like this BENEATH the dash, instead of the door-mounted speakers:

I'll still probably end up making the door pockets, just to have, but I won't end up putting speakers in them unless I can figure out the wiring issue...

The 1990s Rover Mini Cabriolet had special plastic mouldings to fit the speakers on the front wheel arches as there was no rear parcel shelf because of the folding roof/hood. They are probably still availiabe as spares.
The Rover plastic door pockets with small speakers that fit the Mini were fitted to the 1980/90s Austin/Rover Metros. :)
