Tire Suggestion plus a story RE: Exploding O-rings + oil

I'm looking to buy some winter tires seeing as its been freezing rain/ snowing a little and my summer tires are say "ahhh put me away!". Suggestions? Have any for sale?

Story:

I needed an oil change so saturday we randomly stopped at Autozone, picked up some Mobil 1 and drove to my mechanic's shop, where he is nice enough to let us use his rack for our own selfish purposes...

Changed the oil and filter, lowered the rack, and i drove home solo to let the boys do some vinyl-decal-applying work. as i left, i also left a trail of oil behind me; which continued for about 1/4 mile until i got a frantic call "TURN YOUR CAR OFF NOW! you're leaking oil everywhere!!!".

Pulled into jewel, barely out of the way. I got out and sure enough there was a trail of oil as far as I could see. They guys came, and all in all i busted the o-ring off the oil filter. Filled it up with more oil (it wasn't even on the dip stick) and drover 'er back to the shop.

The Chap was a mess, as you can imagine. But, it ended up being a very minor inconvience whilst comparing it to blowing up my motor. Guess that's what happens when you settle for cheap parts on a whim.

If Hansel and Gretel drove MINIs into the forest, they very well may have done this as well...

I've heard of this happening several times before. I was very paranoid on my first oil change on my own this summer.

Glad you caught it in time!!

my last oil change was at Knauz, but paying $250 (yeah) versus a $40 DIY is kind of a no brainer. The o-ring from the old filter in comparison to the one i got at Autozone was different just by looking at it. The Autozone one looked a tad larger and more plastic-like and hard as opposed to rubbery. Not to mention it was a lovely hue of robbin egg blue!

There was a teeny tiny voice in my head that said "hmmm...that doesn't look the same. Hope its alright". It wasn't...should have paid closer attention to that!

yikes. the factory filter comes with a new o-rings for like $11 a pop.

why not just go to the dealer and get the authentic part?
it's only like $1 more than the M1 filters i use on my other cars.

It was just a convenience thing more or less- nearest dealer is about 50 minutes away. Lesson learned!

Zagadka- You're in Lake County right? I think we talked about that once before...
You can go to my BF's shop for your oil changes and tires. He says about $70 for the oil change and tires depend on what you want. He just got me some Eagle F1 All Seasons for the winter. There's a $40 rebate going on right now for Goodyears but it ends Dec 1st ($40 for 4 tires, or $80 if you open a Goodyear credit card, rebate comes back to you as a Visa Gift card either way). He's not sure when the next one will start but they usually have some kind of deal. He can get whatever. Or if you can get them from tirerack.com, he'll mount and balance them for you. He's in Gurnee on Grand Ave. I can get you some prices and options; just tell me if you have 16's or 17's. He has a few customers with MINIs so most of his employees are familiar with them.

Well I can vouch for the fact after over a month with no issues I havd an OEM o-ring snap on me after a 500mi drive. I go to Advance Auto and get their filter $3 cheaper than the non functioning $9 OEM filter from Knauz and no issues with them in 25k mi and several much longer road trips.

That filter + 5 Quarts Royal Purple can usuallybe had forless than $50.

Here's my story.

Same thing - A chunk tore out of the O ring when installing the filter - it looked just like the pic above...

i trust that you guys put a thick coat of oil on the o-ring before
you installed the canister back on, right? i can't see
how it could pinch otherwise...

Always, like I said, I went for quite a while withno issues, just keeping the engine @ temp for 10 hours seemed to cause something to snap. The ring itself was excessively tight (seemed a size too small) I've gdone afew of the advance auto filters and ring with no difficulty no issues.

Oiled mine well. Not the first time I've done it. Didn't feel any different this time vs. any other... but the SOB tore anyway... hopefully a fluke and won't be a common thing...

Makes the $60 oil change at Jacobs sound like a better deal all the time.

More rushed?

there certainly are optionsif you don't want to DIY for whatever reason. I always just feel more comfortable doing my own work.
