I'm a little new to NAM (and MINIs in general) - what's the purpose of a skid plate on a MINI? I can understand it on a truck that goes off road (as I did with a previous truck I had) but I can't see anyone taking a MINI off the road intentionally. I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just trying to understand why I would need / want this.

The MINI is a low car. With a lot of vulnerable engine components... The skid plate can help protect these from various events: road kill, ice-chunks, debris, etc. (search this site for "road kill") Also helps to protect the rather exposed power steering pump cooling fan from debris clogging the fan and burning up the pump.

It does make oil changes a bit more difficult. Some folks use a quick-valve and a drain hose. Others use a Pela-style set up to suck out the oil from above. Personally, I remove the skid plate as I think it's a good idea to inspect the underside of the engine on a regular basis to monitor engine leaks and check the CV joint boots. Granted, it does help that I have a lift which makes it a lot easier now.
