Quote: Not planning on visiting any of the vendors either, I take it?

But I agree, if you are only peripherally involved, especially not participating in anything (i.e. just a spectator, as you said), it doesn't make sense to register, so I don't blame you... and I appreciate your candor.
100% will not be visiting any vendors. I've spent my entire mod budget on stuff from the NAM marketplace. The final Pre Dragon piece, my new H-sport springs, will be installed tomorrow night. If I visited a vendor, I would just be torturing myself.

Me Too! I just hate the anticipation of what else we will get in our little package... I keep reading "Additional items are currently being finalized" where they have the goodies list.

Quote: I'll step up and confess to be an unregistered person. I'm planning on going to the AutoX as a spectator. I specifically asked in the MoTD Questions Thread if this required a registration. If it did, I was happy to register. If it didn't, I didn't see a reason to.

No events - no registration. Makes logical sense. Its not about being a rebel.

The event we all participate in is actually MOTD 4. But to each themselves of course, after all this the Land Of The Free.

Herbert

FYI, Stefanie by the time you read this you will be registered. Thus 595

So I discovered thanks to Edge's PM. Thanks for registering me. I really wasn't trying to undermine the plan. I'm just planning on doing it relaxed this year.. putzing around, seeing the sights, and putting a ton of miles on my new MCS. If "beverages" are your thing, there will be Woodchuck & Strongbow with your name on it as a thanks.

Quote: We as a group do, yes, due to sheer numbers... I was merely pointing out that some people are deliberately choosing not to register for the event, yet they will be coming and enjoying the benefits of all of the organizing - the presence of all the vendors being a key part of that.

The claim is usually made "I'm not paying to drive a public road", but they are missing the point. The registration has nothing to do with driving 129, 28 or any of the other nice roads. The registration has to do with being counted as part of the group, part of the community, with enjoying the benefits of all of the hard work put in by the clubs and individuals who are involved in organizing. The fact that DCMM is providing event insurance (not to be confused with auto insurance) against organizer liability is only part of that registration fee.

Since the organizers (especially DCMM) are opening ourselves up to potential litigation (i.e. if something "bad" happens during the event), do not be surprised if in future years, MOTD registration is required in order to sign up for any events. That was not the case this year, but realize that organizers (again, ALL organizers, not just DCMM) are going out on a limb simply by being associated with the event.

Sorry to get serious... I want us all to have FUN too... but this is a very litigious society, and freeloaders over an extremely reasonable $5 registration fee just seems... petty.
I'm curious too how many didn't register yet made sure to say they were with the MOTD group to get a discount on their room. That is only one of many benefits. For others like me, as I mentioned in another thread, this gives me the chance to meet up and have work done by those who own MINI performance shops. I'm in an area where the nearest MINI performance shop is at least 600 miles away so this event is a great plus. Not to forget the other vendors as well.

It's definitely worth the price of admission. Especially when that price is already saved with the discounts available on the rooms.

It has been mentioned more than once that the $5 fee is NOT the reason that some choose not to register. I've been around the Dragon long enough to understand and respect the choices of those individuals who are not registering.

To encourage continued registrations in a positive manner is a great thing.
To continue to beat the $5 dead horse is not.

FYI....I have full registration. No need to sign me up again.

I understand that comletely. It is not the $5 thing. I have the big registration package, as well al extra tee's and stuff. My folks did not register as they will be out 4-wheeling and not doing the Mini thing. They are just tagging along with me to keep me going up there by myself.

So, that said, if you see an older couple (60's) driving a truck and pulling 2 "Artic Cat" 4-wheelers, they are with me, Say Hi

how mini MINIs?
Had a vision in my head the other morning before i totally woke up...you know how that is...It's cook'in in your head before you open your eyes and by the time you get your coffee it's done and you're on it 100%.

Well, this is what my brain was cooking the other morning...

How many MINIs can you fit, bonnet to boot, in eleven miles?

Then think about what that Parade up the Dragon will be like, or could be like. In other words how many MINIs we got and how many would be coming and how many going...

Some 'o you math people get on that one. Please!! I'm no math person, I just think stuff up.

Fun stuff to think about...uhuh???

Sometimes I wonder how and why stuff like that flys into my brain...especially first thing in the morning.

Oh yeah, lots of stuff goes on in my brain all the time...but, in the morning I'm not in control of it until after coffee.

Clearly, those who do not own a MINI or Mini, and will not be bringing one, are not part of the "target" group. My observations were targeted at those who DO have a MINI/Mini, are part of the NAM community, and are coming to Deal's Gap specifically to be there as part of MOTD, but deliberately do not register.

THOSE people are the ones my comments were directed at. Nobody else.

OK, I'll give it a stab...

Official length of MINI Cooper - 143.1" (source - miniusa.com)
Official length of MINI Cooper S - 143.9" (source - miniusa.com)

If we assume an average between the two... 143.5"

Now, the actual length of the Dragon from Tabcat Bridge to Highway 28 (i.e. Crossroads of Time) is 11.8 miles (source - tailofthedragon.com)

Now, 143.5 inches equals 0.0022648358585858584 miles... or, converted the other way, 1 mile equals 63360 inches.

If we multiply 63360 inches by 11.8 (miles), we come to 747648 inches. Divide by the 143.5 inch average... the answer is... 5210.09059 MINIs! Since you can't have a partial MINI (well, you can, but it's a terrible thought!), the final answer is:

5,210 MINIs can fit on the Dragon, bumper to bumper (actually touching).

Impressive, huh? Now, if we assume a safe following distance of at least 4 MINIs... that would mean we'd divide by 4... which still means 1,302 MINIs could all fit on the Dragon at the SAME time in a line, with the space of 3 MINIs in-between each one.

In case a 4 MINI distance isn't considered by some to be a large enough following distance, here are some more quick calcs:

5 MINI distance = 1,042 MINIs
6 MINI distance = 868 MINIs
7 MINI distance = 744 MINIs
8 MINI distance = 651 MINIs

So don't worry, we'll all fit in one direction at the same time! The interesting thing is going to be trying to get everyone to turn around at Tabcat Bridge... I will even go so far as to suggest that none of the leaders STOP at Tabcat Bridge... just turn around and drive back... or it will likely become a big traffic jam in the small space of the Tabcat Bridge parking area!
