Having just done this, recommend not using your key to open things up, as Mini directions provide, as you may chew up the plastic. Use a flat head screwdriver that fits.

Always use a new battery.

My key died and the battery read 2.89 volts. I found one in a drawer that read 3.02 volts but it still did not work. I then bought a new battery at the store (that read 3.28 volts) and now the key works just fine.

Peter

Like it was mentioned above, follow the instructions in the manual and use a small flat head screwdriver. I replace more batteries in BMW remotes than MINI remotes all day in a dealer parts department. I would rather replace BMW ones before these any day. These are the hardest remotes to replace batteries in. If you worried and your MINI dealer is close by take it to them and have them replace it. The battery s less than $10.00. You should only have to replace it every 2 years.
