To figure this out, first you need to know what model year you have. Next you need to know if you have an "S" model with the turbocharged engine, or non-S or "justa" model. "S" and JCW models can be easily identified by the hood scoop and badging.
Cooper (non-turbocharged) 2007 - 2010: N12 Cooper (non-turbocharged) 2011 - 2013: N16 Cooper S (turbocharged) 2007 - 2010: N14 Cooper S (turbocharged) 2011 - 2013: N18 Cooper JCW (turbocharged) 2007 - 3/2013: N14 (turbo, compression ratio, and other components differ from the S model) Cooper JCW (turbocharged) 3/2013 and up: N18 (turbo, compression ratio, and other components differ from the S model) The years above are model years, not calendar years, and the dates may be different for different models - R57 vs. R56, etc. The best way to be sure is to consult the VIN decoder here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...vindecoder.php or http://myminivin.com/ Then check www.realoem.com with your VIN and build date to help you understand your exact model and parts, some items (for example the HPFP) were changed after a certain date. If you still have your original hood and engine/emission sticker, the engine designation is there under the hood as well.
