So it is possible that my transmission is toast, but I have seen a number of local Mini performance shops say it's my front diff. One recomended a Wavetrac LSD. He said that he will shim it, and he does that a lot. I learned that wavetrac only makes for the F56.
Yeah, i was off the radar for a while. I had gotten my clutch and flywheel replaced at the dealer for the wonderful price of $5,200. It was the first repair I had to pay for.
Anyway, Below is a video of what it sounds like when I spin the wheels. The car drive fine and when it first happened, I only heard the expensive sounds when making tight turns. I have since been babying it.
So the responses I have been getting from most places is to replace the transmission, which new is cost prohibitive. Used, would be about $5-$6k. Those shops are unwilling or doesn't have the tooling to open the transmission and replace the open differential. Because MIN/BMW don't sell the diff as a unit, some other shops are willing to just replace the "seemingly" bad diff with a limited ship diff.
So I guess my question is: Does it sound to anyone that my diff is bad, and that replacing it is the cost effective thing to do. Also, how will a LSD change the overall characteristics of the car?
