There is a button right under the hood latch for it

I have a 2011 R60. That would be a negative on the emergency latch.

I replaced my latch 4 years ago while it was still (barely) working. I would have to pull the handle 4 or 5 times to get the hatch open. Doing a little research I discovered that replacing the electric latch release with the hatch open takes about 15 minutes. Conversely, if the hatch is stuck closed it becomes a major operation. Ergo, I got when the gettin' was good, went down to the dealership, purchased the part and changed it myself right there in the parking lot in just a few minutes. My strong suggestion is that if there is any life left in that latch, get the hatch open and leave it open until you can replace the part.

Which part did you replace? the handle itself? the latch in the bottom of the hatch?

Not the handle. The latch. I have also seen it called "Actuator Latch" or "Trunk Actuator Latch."

Yes, that is the part (#4). And you'd better replace it while you can still get that trunk open. 'Cause if that "actuator" fails 100%, getting the trunk open is a huge deal. Conversely, replacing the actuator with the hatch OPEN is a 15 minute affair.
