Won't shift into Park and other Gear Selector Problems
 

Hello,
Yesterday my 2013 Countryman S with 110K miles refused to shift into Park. Shifts between R, N, and D. Also noted that if you barely wiggle the shift knob, it goes into "manual shift" mode; can also indicate N while still on D. It seems that the whole shifter assembly is lose. Maybe the spring broke? No codes are indicated and vehicle shifts fine. Also, key is stuck, since the tranny can't be shifted into Park.
Could this be the shifter assembly (broken) or the need to adjust the shifter cable assembly?
No indication that any liquids were spilled on the shifter assembly.
Is it easy to remove the center console to replace the shifter assembly (if needed)?

There are multiple YouTube videos showing how to replace the stereo or add in Android Auto/Carplay, these all show also how to take out the shifter which when I did it I think wasn't that difficult. There were a few screws up by the cup holders and I believe one more on the back of the shifter near the parking brake.

Thanks MReiland! I did see a video after my post and it seems that accessing the shifter assembly is simpler than I thought it would be.

So I was able to access the shifter solenoid assembly but it seems that a) it is attached from under the tunnel (under the car) and b) the cable is not removable so everything needs to be replaced. On the F56, the shifter cable can be removed and the shifter solenoid assembly can be removed from the top, without having to remove the exhaust, shields, and other components. On the R60, not so (unless I'm missing something...)

OK, I tackled the project this past weekend. Need to remove the air intake and air filter assembly to access the shifter cable. There is one nut holding it in place and then the rubber grommet pops off the mounting bracket.
The fun part is that after removing the center console components in order to access the shifter solenoid assembly, you need to get under the car and remove almost the entirety of the exhaust assembly (right after the cat converter) in order to remove the metal shield and be able to access the shifter solenoid assembly's four bolts. No cables were unplugged under the car. After replacing it, everything is back to normal and I was able to shift into Park and remove the key.

Thanks for the update Max, do you have a part # and cost on the shifter assembly? Mine is extremely loose, still shifts into park but needs to be fixed.

The Steptronic Gearshift for my R60 is P/N 25-16-7-644-233. It lists for $711 but you can find it for a lot less. I bought mine from ebay and paid $170 with shipping and taxes.
