Asking for a friend: R60 heat shield rattle

Hi,

After STFF and google for known and related issues, I thought I'd ask here.

A friend of mine has a 2012 R60 with a pesky rattle that the dealership can't seem to remedy. FWIW, people who hear it from outside the car sometimes ask if she's driving a diesel MINI.

The MINI was involved in a rear-end accident. The dealership has done a nice job of repairing it, but they admit that they haven't been able to eliminate the rattle, a rattle they attribute to the heat shield.

Is that enough information to offer a possible solution (if this is a known issue) or an alternate cause(s) for the rattle?

Thanks!

Wow, it seems like something is out of tolerance, either the position of the exhaust components, the position of the heat shield, the mounting of those items, or perhaps they are damaged.

Either way, IMO, the car isn't fixed, and the repair facility should work on it until it is. It should be pretty straight forward, right?

Are they trying to punt, or are they working through it?

If the noise is able to be produced or to make it happen, then that's the time for someone to look at it for an easier repair/diagnoses. So, is there a certain time frame or amount of road/driving time that your friend does with their car that makes it easiest to get this noise to occur?
Or is it more random than that?

Of course it's...not reproducible, as far as I know. That would make it too easy :-)

Hi DWooderson.

That's my guess too. Maybe a hanger got bent and under certain conditions the tolerance is too tight and that produces the rattle?

The dealership hasn't dropped the ball. I think they're just stumped.

Check the heat shield on the DP ( down pipe) , its very close to the catalytic and just a nudge and it can rattle on the exhaust DP. Its flexible so it can be bent back on the heat shield.
