My R60 requires that I step on the brake to shift from neutral to drive. When I go through a car wash, with another car on my bumper, I have to leave the transmission in neutral. But, to get out, I have to step on the brake to shift into drive. I am terrified that I will get rear-ended by the car behind me; it also probably scares them to see a set of brake lights come on 2 feet ahead of them.

Is there a way to disable the interlock for shifts from neutral to drive?

I have also noticed that if I am in reverse and quickly shift through neutral to drive, I do not have to step on the brake. But, if I am slow, it won't go into drive without stepping on the brake.

 

The interlock is there so no one accidentally moves the shifter into gear without stepping on the brake for good reason. I wouldn't worry too much about the car wash issue. I dont ever remember seeing the car behind me close enough for me to worry about them rear-ending me while i'm putting my car into gear.

 

IIRC, there's an explanation (early) in the manual as to how to deal with car washes. It may only explain how to *start* the process, though, not exit.

 

Interesting, I'm pretty sure mine does not require stepping on the brake when shifting between N and D.

 

Well I tried it tonight and sure enough mine also requires stepping on the brake to go from N to D. Not sure about D-N or R-N-D (didn't think to try these until now). This is the first car I've driven that has required that.

When I learned to drive I was taught to shift to N in case of a skid until you regained control again, at which point you could shift back to D (without stepping on the brake). I guess in this age of electronic aids (DSC) some of these old driving techniques are now considered obsolete...

Here's what I learned. The interlock seems to kick in during the speed dropping below 4 on it's way to 3 mph. There also seems to be a time component as I could only sometimes get it to kick in when at a stop sign after stepping off the brake. With my hand on the stick, while rolling to a stop I got so i could feel the interlock clicking in. No such luck from a stop, Must do more research later!!!

So unless you are in a very fast car wash I think you are just stuck. The good news is it seemed to me you only had to tap the brake enough to get the brake lights on not actually stop to get to shift. I also didn't have a good down hill to see if the interlock would kick back off after you got moving faster.

 

I've only gone from the manual Clubman to the auto Countryman recently, but I'm pretty sure that I've bumped it into neutral coasting downhill. No brakes required for that...
