R60 False Tire Pressure Monitoring System Alert
False Tire Pressure Monitoring System Alert
This morning while driving tire pressure alert went off.
What's cool is it lets you know what tire is showing the alert. So I wait for a safe place to stop check the tire with a gauge - it is fine, check the others - they are all fine.
Through the OBC I reset the tire pressure system, drive for a few hundred yards and the yellow low pressure warning goes off, and stayed off for the rest of the day.
Any insight to what might have happened?

Was there a drastic change in temperature for any reason? I called my dealership once to tell them my warning light was going off and they said it's common with drastic temperature change.
After a while and having to reset the system a few times, I actually really had a slow leak in my run flat and unfortunately needed to replace the tire.

I call that a digital fart. Our R53 used to have those quite frequently, not so much any more. Experience with various cars is that 70% of the time the warning means there is an actual low pressure situation, and the rest of the time is just to remind me it's been too long since I checked the tires' pressure.
The R53's TPMS was susceptible to "digital farts", chiefly because the system used the wheel speed sensors to detect a "flat". Unfortunately, different road conditions affecting traction could cause the warning. With the R60, there are actual pressure sensors in the wheel (other side of valve stem) that send the signals. This system is more reliable, but it can be fairly sensitive.
If it happens again, drive to the dealer and have them check it out. It could be a bad sensor.

I had the exact same thing happen a couple of weeks ago. First start up in the morning, got an alert that the RF tire was low. Checked. It wasn't, but after reading *all* the tires, I realized all four were about 3 psi too low. Topped 'em off. Reset the TPMS. No more light.
I doubt the monitoring system is set to go off if it detects a 3 pound difference.
I chalked it up to a glitch.

What did the dealer do to replace it? Was it free?
