Where Are CM's Built?

I've seen numerous references to shipping out of Bremerhaven so I assume most, if not all, CM's are being built in or near Bremerhaven.

Is that the cae, are all the CM's built in/near Bremerhaven or are there other locations?

Sticker says:
Transmission : Belgium
Engine : France
Aseembly: Graz, Austria

GeoffreyM Mar 10, 2011 12:49 PM

It's built by Magna Steyr at the plant the used to produce the BMW X3 and I think still does work for Bentley.

We drive subcontracted Mini's

So far, mine seems to be built better than my wife's Oxford built 2009 Clubbie. But only time will tell.

Thanks.

I read all that on the sticker in the dealer...too bad none of it stuck in my brain!!

Yeah, but why when you log into the Owner's Lounge to check on "Where's My Baby" it says "From Oxford, England to your dealer's door?"

hexproject Mar 10, 2011 05:24 PM

my Transmission was from Japan.

inimini2007 Mar 11, 2011 06:09 AM

I believe the X1 will be using the CM platform.

Is yours a manual or automatic? That might account for the different location.

MINIdave Mar 11, 2011 08:26 AM

They're all built in one place, in Austria.......Bremerhaven is just the shipping port. (Closest or most convenient, or simply the one BMW uses?)

Because the Owner's lounge is lame...it's just there to look pretty. If they wanted it to be useful they'd hook it into their databases and give you all the juicy details about where your car is in the process, where it's going next and when.

Of course that costs $ to build and maintain so for now you have to call ASK-MINI or your MA if you want more info.

Hobie44610 Mar 11, 2011 09:53 AM

You'd think it would be cheaper to have that info available on-line thus reducing their staff and overhead.

I agree the O/L is lame. It says our CM is scheduled for production and I was told today by our MA that it has been produced already. That was quick since it went into production on Wednesday.

lindseybp Mar 11, 2011 09:55 AM

Ours still says at VDC and it's been at the dealer since yesterday. OL is not the most up to date thing in the world. But better than nothing.

Austria: Steyr: Chrysler T&C...

Assembled in a Steyr plant in Austria. Actually pretty well known for rugged off road vehicles, of course some w/ military origins. Other BMW contracts too. They don't exactly put it in their literature, but also where the Chrysler Town and Country AWD system came from. No longer sold in US, but having owned it, in the same league as the Sienna (and thus Highlander and Lexus RX) AWD system. I don't think the CM one is particularly different: fundamentally FWD, silicone clutch pack, independent suspension rear diff w/ half shafts, etc.

lindseybp Mar 11, 2011 11:34 AM

They also make a $200k+ Aston Martin at this same facility.

Out of curiosity, do we know the hours of operation for the factory in Graz?

It's not likely 24x7 but I am curious to know how it's operating.

From what I understand - - - it is strict union 9 to 5, Monday thru Friday. Friday afternoon, they all take off and drive the finished cars to Bremmerhaven, drop them off at the wharf, and then go carouse until Sunday afternoon when they catch the train home. It's best not to buy a Friday car - everyone is wound up for the weekend - or a Monday car - everyone is recovering from the debauchery. That's what I heard, but I may be wrong.

Yes automatics are made by Aisin, the top AT manufacturer in the world, and are made in Japan.

Manual's are made by Getrag, a German co. and manufactured in Belgium.
