R60 At what point in the process does a VIN get assigned?

At what point in the process does a VIN get assigned?

Just curious if anyone knows at what point in the process a VIN number gets assigned and what it means as far as how close to completion it is if it does have a VIN.

My vin seemed to get assigned as soon as the car was scheduled for production with an actual date and hits the first stage. Even though I had a build slot assigned date of 1/3 (according to my MA) it stayed "scheduled for production with no date". Once it hit "in the body shop" or something like that, the VIN was assigned.
