I'm sure I will rack up 200 miles showing friends. My best friend bought an 06 MCS two days after i ordered mine. I think that's the other exciting part. Having close friends to share the madness with.

Congratulations! :) I remember the night before I picked up my MINI, I felt anxious and relieved at the same time. When drove off the lot, it felt unreal. When you pick it up, stop and realize the moment, every moment you're at the dealer.

Great news.. Our's has been unloaded and should be on the way to the Dealers. If they call, I guess it will hold to the first of next week. This week is 'booked'.

Congrats! You won't believe the feeling when you actually get the "treatment" .... Blair gave me the royal walk through, pulled Moe right into the showroom and wow..When others were walking around "looking" at cars I was like.. "NO TOUCHING THIS IS MINE".... I actually jumped up and down when he pulled it into the room. I had to go back the other day for some ordered goodies and they actually had 2 cars in the showroom for pick up and had little pedistals set up welcoming the new owner.... so cool! I'm sure other dealers do similar treatment but the experience I had at East Bay 2wks ago was so much fun!

How did all of you survive?

I was talking to my friend that should be getting his in 2 weeks, and he went through the same thing with his Ducati. Except he couldn't tack over something like 5 to 6k for a 1,000 miles. Which is REALLY hard to not do.

So you're now in SoCal... so your first "drive" will be the long drive home huh? Remember while you're going down the boring I5 to vary your speed and not drone on at a set mph... part of the break in rules.

I was thinking about that today. Should be an interesting drive. Some real self control for sure. I'm in the process of making Mp3 cd's for the drive back.

you should read some of the articals on NAM [as well as elsewhere] about engine break in
some say go out and drive it hard, VERY HARD!
then change the oil after 50 or so miles and drive it as you may.
this a proven technique and makes alot of sense
plus it eliminates the waiting period. you got 49,950 more miles to see if it hurts anything so not much to lose.

if you have a "long drive home" take the fun windy roads and put it through the gears.

my first 1000 miles was a road trip mostly freeway miles with the cruise control on. my car has over 100,000 miles and not one single engine problem yet.

so who knows who is right

Interesting suggestion.

This is something my friends always go back and forth on. Do new cars really need the break in period? I understand why they used to suggest it. I might consider doing what you suggested. How much does an oil change tend to run at the dealership? I won't have access to a garage or someplace to do it myself.

I am driving down the 5. Which Is about a 3 to 4 hour drive, which is a pretty straight line.

the dealer will charge you $60 to change your oil
not bad really 5 quarts of synthetic at $5 a quart plus a $8 filter is $33
another $27 for the labor its the cheapest thing you will ever get done at a mini dealer. plus if its anything like it is around here its 3-5 weeks for any maintanance appointments so its a good time to bring up other concerns you may have - rattles, squeeks, odd noises, drivability issues.
plus you get a free car wash.
I have never been able to do any of my own service [living downtown in an apartment] either so I actualy look forward to my oil changes at the dealer.
I went to a lube place once and they did a good job but charged me $55 and no car wash

the purpouse of slow driving for break in is to allow the rings to set naturaly.
but realisticaly the rings set the first time you drive the car. therefor driving it around slowly may allow the rings to seat in an unatural position comparable to when you do drive it harder down the road. Im not explaining this very technicaly and it is only a theory anyway. but I have torn a few engines apart and I understand ring and valve issues and this makes sense to me.
alot of people dont think synthetic should be used for break in because it offers too much lubrication and wont allow the rings to "rough up" the walls of the cylinders. this may be another reason that the "hard drive" break in is better because you are not pampering the engine so much and you are really "breaking" [should be called working] it in

so I think the idea is 50 miles of hard driving up and down through the gears then change the oil... and enjoy. [change the oil to get rid of any contaminants]

again there are threads in this site about this which may explain it better or may confuse the issue even more.

as I said before I just drove my car as I would normaly drive then took it in for its first oil change around 1000 miles or so and 100,000 miles later I have never had an engine problem.
