2011(or 12) MCS w/ JCW Tuning Kit VS. 2013 JCW?
I've just learned from research that starting in 2011, the MCS came with the N18 engine. Please set me straight if that's incorrect. The Factory JCW didn't make that switch til 2013. And as I understand it, the N18 is a far more desirable engine (durability, tweaks, better parts, etc.) to the N14 that the Factory JCW came with until 2013. So if I'm trying to score a used hardtop, with all other factors equal (they never are but, for the sake of argument...) would it be a better investment to buy a keeper that was a 2011 or '12 (or even '13 i guess) MCS that has the N18 and the JCW kit added (and be able to more easily find a car and pay less for it), or find a 2013 that was Factory JCW and pay more? 2013's that are lower mileage and not overpriced seem to be hard to find, even on a national level. Also, I think from reading that the tuning kit doesn't often include suspension, and the JCW does, but if I'm not taking it to the track, wouldn't the S factory suspension be almost as fun with the Kitted mods?
Or, is this a better option/comparision - what about '09-'12 JCW compared to S with Kit of the same year? Thanks so much everybody! |
If you can find a factory JCW with N18 engine, you'll be better off than an earlier car with the N18 + JCW kit. The factory JCW will have some better components, including bigger turbo, which will not be on a tuning kit car.

A factory JCW has many added things and if you are looking for a JCW, get a JCW. It is the best advice you can get, but you are also going to pay more for one, as they cost more when new! Hope you find what you are looking for! Keep us posted. |

Got 'er!! Spent way more than we had intended, but based on the suggestions from you awesome members and other reading, felt springing for the 2013 would pay off.

Thanks! Was pretty well care for, and mileage is less than 50K. The only negatives so far was a distinct smokers smell, and since we don't smoke, we are trying to remove that. The hood stripes are a bit dulled and faded, so I think I am going to peel those off, and hope there isn't too much difference in the paint. Were the hood stripes just vinyl decals from the factory, or were they painted and these would have to be add-ons?
Also, Mario, if you don't mind me asking, what ballpark are we in to get a "stage 2" tune put in? Are the other mods you have listed on your sweet ride necessary to get it tuned, or can it remain stock with the stage 2 tune? And does a "stage 1" tune have to be done first? Thanks again! |

You can jump straight to stage 2 if you have a downpipe, Intercooler and colder spark plugs. This will give you a 60hp gain. I sent you a Private Message with pricing and requirements. Congrats on acquiring a 13 MCS JCW model. I am sure you will not regret the extra expense, once you have made it down the road a few times in JCW style! Once you can get to the twisty roads, your smile will crack your face! Enjoy a JCW, the way it is supposed to be! It is a great looking specimen and I know you will have tons of fun with it! Congrats on the R56 JCW, on the smoker smell its kind of hard to get it 100% out, change the cabin filter first, then i took all my seats out and scrubbed the carpet and steamed the headliner(be careful on it as too much water can ruin it). Let it set in the sun on a hot day with everything open they wipe down with cleaner on everything, seats ...etc.
That helps, some people think the deodorizers work but i just clean everything. Good luck. |
Buy some activated charcoal, put in in breathable material, put on the floors in the back and under the front seats.
It absorbs smoke stink, but takes some time and may need replacing a couple of times. |
