Missing gears

I'm new to the community, please let me know if this problem has already been resolved. I recently purchased an 03 Cooper Base w/ the 5 SPD Midland. A week after I bought it I lost 2,4, R gears but still have 1,3,5. Can someone please tell me what might be wrong. One mechanic says it needs a rebuild, another says the cables are wore out and it just needs new shifter cables.

I did check the cables and both seemed fine. But stretching would be hard to detect in the cable. Shifting into the top 3 gears is solid, just the bottom 3 are "void" as it were.

The bottom of the cables attach under the exaust...
Can you shift them ON THE TRANNY or are they missing there? The lever on the tranny...that the cables attach too...can you get it to slip in or are they "gone" there?

The cables are set up like this and if you find one busted or damaged , let me know as you have to have the vin and then find out what base you have.
