What's the red light on the tachometer for?

So now that I have ordered my Clubbie, I am seeing Mini's EVERYWHERE! :impatient:

I have noticed on a few of them that there is a red light on the top of the tachometer that sometimes pulses when the car is parked.

What is this?
Is this the equivalent of the BMW clown nose?
Is this part of the factory installed alarm system?

It's the alarm system. In the past, I started seeing more of the cars that I just purchased. However, Mini's are rare around where I am and I have yet to see a single Clubman. :(
