Let's talk MPG, newbies (M)

Got my car 2 weeks ago Wednesday (3/12) and put my first tank of gas in this past weekend. I averaged 25mpg. I haven't really taken the car on the highway - mostly start & stop driving in the city.

How does that compare with some of you who just got their cars? Better? Worse? Average?

How about those of you who have had your cars a little longer or maybe had another MINI before this one - what should I expect?

05 S Cabrio here that I've had since new. Last tank of 'suburban' driving was 25.8. Had as low as 23.5 and high as 28 so that result is about average. On the highway I get between 34-35 very consistenty. Have a moderate foot and always use Chevron premium.

28 City, 32 Highway on my 04 MC Automatic
37 average so far on my 08 Clubman

MiniPol Mar 28, 2008 09:21 AM

Last I checked, 35.6 mpg in my 2007 MCS.

jcauseyfd Mar 28, 2008 09:53 AM

33.1 in my 2008 MCS. About 75% highway miles.

Quesera Mar 28, 2008 11:27 AM

29 mpg in interstate break-in driving(frequent stops & starts, speed changes, etc.)

About 25 mpg mixed driving around town.

Last fill up I had 33.1 mpg during the first 10 miles or so, mixed freeway and city streets. It's settling in about 25 mpg now.

Shell Premium ($3.35 per gallon)

Mileage calculation are computer's, so they're likely a bit optimistic.

MINI S convertible, manual transmission, top down as much as possible.

Remember this is the old engine.

Mileage questions should really be nested in model forums as the cars are very different in this regard...add to that the need for tranny (and other) info.

R56 Cooper manual - city only, driving for economy....41 mpg average. Right now I'm at 42.4 city. No passengers.

2003 MCS Souped Up

Got 30-31 mpg Highway so far. The previous owner added special intake and muffler system. This car is more fun than my 2002 WRX.

I picked Zoe up on 3/19 - since then i've been getting about 32mpg average and most of those were highway miles. I took a quick 3hour road trip last weekend to visit family (highway all the way, mostly) and got 36-37mpg!! =) Although, ive only had to fill her up once so far and used the premium gas -- ouch. More than my little civic from before.

Do you guys all use the recommended premium gas?

TexasCooperS Mar 29, 2008 08:07 PM

around town I average 26 or so, but on the highway I get mich better. Last week on a road trip from dallas to san antonio, I got 36 on the highway

Really work those gears as you adjust your speed. Step down your gears as you slow down so when you speed up again you'll be in the right gear. This can make a difference over time.

Just went thur my first tank today. 08 MCS 6 speed 42 mpg...

richardsd3 Mar 30, 2008 01:18 PM

You aren't pumping the super charger, are you? I baby my 2003 modified MCS and get 32 highway. I realize the temptation to "exercise the car" is Irresistible.

canyonking Mar 30, 2008 03:01 PM

canyonking Mar 30, 2008 03:02 PM

Trade it for an 08.

I've had my 07 MCS since August. In warmer weather, I was averaging 32-34mpg. Since it got cold and winter blend rolled in, I've been averaging about 30 (although the OBC still says 33). My drive is mostly on the highway, but it's half stop and go and half "at speed."
Oh - I learned how to drive a manual just before I got him.

RaceFace Mar 30, 2008 04:36 PM

We've got a Clubman S (automatic) with 700 miles on it and have been holding at 29.7mpg. I'm pretty impressed since it's still not broken in yet.

Premium gas?

I see that Premium gas is suggested and it's what I'm using presently.
Anyone have experience with using 89 octane instead of the 91?
I've also heard from my service adviser that people "split" the tank by using half and half...89 and 93 octane.
The 93 octane is $3.60 + in South Florida!

I'd like to know the answer to this question too! Premium is expensive - about 3.50 from what i've seen here in MD.

misslindsey Mar 31, 2008 09:30 AM

Gas is expensive. Difference from 87 to 93 here is about $0.20/gal, or $2.64 on a fill-up. That's less than I'd spend on coffee.
Any modern car will adjust spark, etc, for lower octane fuel. As a result, performance and fuel economy will suffer. It really is worth running the good stuff. I believe a MINI is an investment worth taking care of.

Exactly! You beat me to it! Perfect answer. To go Super Unleaded is roughly $2.60 a tank more. You end up with worse mileage if you drop your octane. I personally choose to pay the extra at the pump....for better mileage and piece of mind. :)
