Doesn't roll backwards...

I picked up my new BRG MCS last Friday night. The intervening days have been so busy that I haven't done any serious (break in) driving of the car.

One thing that I've noticed though is that when I pull up to a traffic light and in on an incline (nose up), when the light turns green, the car doesn't roll backwards (as I would expect). Because its manual, I'd expect it to roll back.

Is this a "feature" (that is, by design)? Are my brakes too tight (and therefore I'm wasting alittle fuel)?

I'm taking the car in tomorrow for get the rest of the "accessories" installed and was hoping to know whether I should have them look at this or not.

TIA.

Nope, this is normal. The hill assist is one thing that I wish my 05' had.

Welcome to the world of MINI ownership!

It's part of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) program, and a definite help around hilly areas! Not a necessity, especially if you've driven a manual before, but just one of those features that's nice to have around.

But don't hold out for it too long- more than two or three seconds and it'll release the brakes again in case you're intending to roll back.

cooper517 Nov 15, 2007 06:35 AM

actually its part of the LSD. not the DSC

phantasms Nov 15, 2007 07:04 AM

Ummm.... Everything I read said it was the DSC and not the LSD. What would LSD have anything to do with that? The DSC can control brakes...not the LSD.

Anyway I got LSD but specifically didn't get the DSC because I'm teaching my girl stick on this and didn't want her to get spoiled by this no roll backwards baby feature.

Does disabling DSC also disable hill assist?

sndwave Nov 15, 2007 07:50 AM

I don't think we have the hill assist on ours Yucca, but I guess you'll have it on your new one.

going4speed Nov 15, 2007 10:55 AM

If only Wikipedia had the quality checks and balances enjoyed by NAM...

Thank you all for your responses. That answered my question.

R56 Ed Nov 15, 2007 10:04 PM

Guess I got lucky. I don't have LSD, but sure do have hill assist and DSC. What a nice feature.

cooper517 Nov 15, 2007 10:05 PM

hmm i thought it was part of the LSD. An MA told me that. so for sure that its the DSC??

Yep. Certainly not the first time that an MA has been mistaken about a MINI. There's a lot of technical stuff to know about MINIs, and it's no wonder that some of them get confused. Too bad they tell us stuff without checking the facts first. Thank goodness for the configurator and NAM! At least we can discover the majority of information on our own or with the help of our MINI friends.

I don't see any reason to not get DSC on a daily driver. You can always turn it off, or get a mod to turn over in off as a default, but I don't care how good you are in severe weather during daily driving you'll never outperform the DSC when it comes to safety.

I haven't experienced the cute 'hill assist' feature of the new DSC, and at heart I think that detracts from the whole point of owning a standard, but when Johnny Dip$#!T sends his SUV sideways in my direction in a snowstorm I'd rather rely on the DSC technology to do it's thing than counting on my 'only human' responses to see me through. <grin>

Out of curiosity I tried this yesterday, and hill assist is on even with DSC disabled, at least for my 07 R56.

No, the Hill Assist is a 2nd-generation feature only.
