Hello from Indianapolis - new to MINIs - thinking of buying one
Hello all,
I'm 20 years old, going to college for Criminal Justice, and am from Carmel, Indiana (just north of Indianapolis). I'm looking to buy a Mini Cooper S in manual in the next few weeks. Either a brand new one or possibly go used- still deciding.
So far, my options (on a new model) are:
British Racing Green
Black Roof (or color matched, not sure)
DSC, LSD, Xenons, Rear Fog Lamps, Antracite Headliner, Black Lounge Leather, JCW Strut Brace (I hear it helps protect the struts from serious damage). Also, factory-installed clear bra's for the upper and lower halves of the car.
Let me know what you guys think, or if there are really any options you just wish you had. I thought about the cold weather package, but I'm not sure. Really depends on what the dealership can get in stock or if it has to be custom ordered, then I will probably add it. I thought about the sunroof, but not sure of the premium price - if I'd really use it that much.
Also, I do intend to track it once in awhile, (or at least have that option down the road).
My major concerns are if I should buy a used Mini with modifications, a new S and wait a bit to add some JCW accessories, or wait even longer for the 2008MY to come out. My vehicle now-1997 Ford Exploder which is close to death.

If you're buying brand new...drop the JCW strut brace..new model doesn't need it (so far).
New model has much more available early power/torque and better MPG. some would say that it's not as asthetically pleasing as the 02-06, but that's hotly contested.
Older model is more of a classic driver...feel the road type ride. New model retains most of that but does soften it somewhat...however there is no apparent change in performance as far as handling goes.
It really boils down to personal preference.

I have the sunroof and LOVE it. I don't have the winter package and wish I did! I really wanted heated seats. I love my 02 that I purchased used. I test drove two 07s and I didn't care for the lack (compared to my 02) of road connection feel. I thought it has been dumbed down for the everyone drivers. But, it is personal preference as mentioned before. Drive several cars before you plunk down your $$$. I really didn't like the first 07 I drove, but, the second one was alot better. Keep in mind the 07 is all new and may have problems as such - as do some 02-03s. Have fun.
I like my 07, but have nothing to compare to.
Not as cold in Carmel as in Madison, but $300 for heated seats is very nice. +1 on the sunroof also unless you'll autocross it, then I wouldn't. I'm not a big fan of DSC, but most others would encourage you to get it. Also not great for autocrossing, but you can turn it off I believe.
Either way, can't go wrong with either old or new other than the warranty on the new one.

Welcome to NAM!! I used to live just So. of Carmel and bought my first and second MINI at Dreyer&Reinbold from Rhonda Glenn and never looked back.
She's a great MA and will treat you right and is honest. In fact I'm coming to Indy next week to see my Son and Daughter so if you see a DS/B MCS running around Carmel with Ga. plates, give me a wave.

Great spec. I go with the sunroof regardless of whether you are autocrossing, but you'll get all sorts of debate on that one. Scott at Dreyer took good care of me a few months back. Check out MINI car club of Indiana at MINICCI.org.
