I have an extra driver's side axle / CV shaft assembly from my 2003 cooper S with a manual transmission.
There's nothing wrong with it and the boots show no sign of cracking. It was removed & replaced due to an incorrect diagnosis - hopefully my mistake is your gain. Given the price of a new axle ($500 ), I figured someone out there in the Mini community would appreciate saving a few hundred dollars on a quality used part.
