Uh oh. Who worked on this car before me?

Hi all!

The time has finally come to change the brake pads. I change them myself, but I have yet to do it on the MINI. I checked them yesterday and my brake pads are wearing unevenly. If I look at the front-driver side, the outside pad is tapered (extremely so) but in inside pad is hardly worn but worn evenly. It may not be a big deal but I've just never had this happen. My last car had some uneven wear, but not to this extreme.

The rotors exceed the minimum thickness, so I was going to buy only pads.

So, do I just replace the brake pads, hoping somehow the last guy installed them wrong?

Do I replace the calipers too (isn't that what causes uneven wear)?

Or, I have a warranty through Carmax and I had planned on taking my MINI into the dealer for lifter clatter (65K). Should I let MINI look at the brake/calipers/and rotors and have them sort it out with Carmax. I'd rather go to MINI because even though I can't blame Carmax, the last person to work on the car before I bought it torqued the RD lug at an angle back into the rotor and had sheet metal screws holding on the license plate frame. They were screwed into so far as to bend the license plate frame up, blocking the boot handle. I have two rusted spots where the screws went into the paint under my license plate. Hopefully MINI would be more careful with my car.

It may be defective brake parts so you might as well let the warranty take care of it if they will.

single piston calipers should float on the sliders ... if they stick you may get contact on just one side ,,

first thing I'd do is pull the slider pins and look for damage ... lube and replace.

You need to check to make sure the calipers are sliding correctly. If it's all working maybe the pad is sticking. When you do get new pads go with the EBC reds they work great and much lower dust.
