Sorry to hear about this. I had a similar experience on a road trip, but I thought it was a wheel bearing dying. Luckily I pulled over and waited for the tow truck to bring a jack so I could determine for sure what was going on. Wound up being loose lugs. We wound up attributing it to an attempted theft (I have locking lug nuts) since I made sure to check the tq before we started the trip. Perhaps you had a similar call?
