Need some coilover advice

05 Justacooper

Looking to get the slammed and poked look

I put ALOT of miles on my car. (Ive put 12,000 miles on since April 1st) so I need coils that can handle it while not turning my spine to dust.

I know the Megans are probably the cheapest, but Ive heard they have some issues after time.

So Im looking for coils that a. can handle being driven on daily, b. are semi-comfortable to live with, and c. wont totally break the bank.

Also, what else do I need to go along with them to get the stance I want? How much am I really looking at here?

Ummmm......lower and a comfortable ride are mutually exclusive. The MINI has such a short suspension travel that you are not going to be able to get both w/o a lot more money and lots of modification.

Decide which is more important and go from there.

KW V.1 i think is your best bet for what you are looking for

however there is the cheaper route that alot of guys are going now:

VMAXX coilovers allow you to really slam the car and they are dirt cheap. I dont know how long they last becuase they are relatively new..

Just for reference the most slammed guys on MU are using KW v1 or Vmaxx

As a Megan Dealer I'd encourage you to use the KW V1's too or the Vmaxx, both have good history on VW's and the early reports are good for MINI too. Beware that some guys with super low MINI' and lot's of miles have report axle issues.

This is news to me. My ride is the same, if not more comfortable, than stock and I'm slammed on PSS9's.

I'd suggest KW V1's, they go stupid low. Buddy of mine has used KW on all his rides, latest being a 335i Coupe, pretty slammed and the ride is pretty damn comfy.

The KW V1s seem to be a pretty reasonible price. Where can I find the vmaxx? I did an ebay and a google search and didnt find anything.

How low is too low? Im a total suspension noob. I wanna be as low as I can safely be w/o doing damage to the axles and tearing up the undercarriage. I dont wanna tear my bumper off every time I hit a speed bump either (I did that 3 times in my last car.)

I'm running Koni coilovers on 18's and am more than happy - the biggest surprise was the difference that tyres made. I was initially running Toyo T1-Rs and found the ride very harsh, changed to Parada Spec 2s and all I can say is wow! - so much more comfortable, even dreamy. Oh, and you get a lifetime warranty with Knoi's

And I also live in a place where the roads are horrendous and have one of the highest concentrations of speed humps in England.

There is no such thing as too low lol. Depends on the tire size. On 205/40/17 with my PSS9's wound all the way down (I'd say like 3" drop) I would only really scrape the useless air dam on the bottom of our bumpers. Every now and again I'd scrape the bottom of the front valence but not a big deal really.

Incorrect. The KW V1 and V-Maxx will both allow you to lower the ride height 1.6" and maintain identical compression travel as stock. This is because they're that much shorter yet maintain stock total stroke. This means you can lower the car over 2" and still have a decent ride. The MINI doesn't have as much total stroke as a Viper [7"] but it's more than a Lotus Elise [4"].

I don't see how you can halve the suspension travel of a car and get a softer ride. every single lower/slammed car I have ever ridden in the ride is noticeably stiffer, and this on systems from $1k to $5k in price.

The MINI already has one of the most travel limited suspensions on the market and putting on a suspension with even shorter travel is going to negatively affect the comfort.

This is news to me as I did some research last year on coilovers and was told by numerous manufacuteres that the dampers would only adjust a max of about 1" w/o shortening the travel. And I believe that was the Cross system that allowed at that time the most drop w/o affecting travel.

Where can I get more info to verify this?
