Door lock problems
#102
Power locks should not fail so soon. I have 2 20 year old German Fords and all four locks on both still work. One of them has over 200,000 miles, although mileage should not matter, just time and number of lock cycles.

The driver door actuator is not a much of a nightmare as it looks. With the help of a fellow NAMer and the great write-up and pics from page 2 (or 3) of this thread I was able to get in and out in 45 minutes.
A couple of tips:
The TIS disk says you have to remove and set aside the power window guide. Don't bother. With a little manuevering I was able to work it around the rail.
The TIS disk says you have to remove the door handle and door lock. Don't bother. Once you have all the cables and wires disconnected, remove the 3 screws that hold the actuator to the door. When you do that the actuator will slide down the door and the door lock pin will slide away from the actuator. Reverse to install.
Be very careful to re-route the cables just as they were before so as not to pinch or bind them.
Viola!
Please PM if I can help.

My 03 (late 02 build) cooper w/ 80k miles has the same problem. The remote / toggle switch works for the drivers side but not the passenger side. I can hear clicking, but on the passenger side, but it doesn't unlock. I can still unlock by using the interior handle.

03 cooper with 55k miles.
Today locks worked fine when I unlocked the car. Went for a bite to eat and tried to lock car with the remote NO RESPONSE. Now both doors wont lock/unlock with remote. Toggle switch does not work to lock/unlock either. When holding down the remote to unlock, windows and moon roof still opens but locks don't. Manually I can lock the doors from outside. When in the car I have trouble pushing down the lock on the drivers side. Occasionally the remote responds and I hear the gas cap mechanism working and see the lights flash but locks do nothing.
Ideas anyone? Electrical? Mechanical? Just seems strange both would go out at the same time.
Thx

Probably the actuators, both at the same time seem odd, but it could happen I guess. If it was mechanical (at least the most common cable) then the door handle on the inside wouldn't work, but the lock remote and toggle will still work. If the actuator goes then neither the remote or toggle will work (but key always will).
Since both are not working, maybe check the fuses. Sorry don't know which ones they are off hand, but its worth a try.

I took it to an inexpensive local import garage and they quoted around $400. I passed, and now they work again! Weird... Im glad I passed.

yay! it's fixed!
i have a 2003 mini with 50k miles on it. i'm a girl with not much mechanical experience. the nearest dealership is 400 miles away and they wanted $400 to fix it. using this, i got the part for $82 and it took a couple hours, but it is fixed. the only downside is that when i got to work this morning, the handle on the inside would not open the door (must not have gotten the cable on tight) so i will go back in after work today and fix it. Thanks for all the help!

Help with cable-Please!
as posted before, my 02MCS inside driver's door handle has been out of action for about ?10 or 15K?
No respect for my Dealer, so I've just been rolling the window down and opening from the outside...every time
Acutator works (remote on key locks and unlocks, lock on outside handle works, outside handle works (even from inside car)
So I think it is the door handle cable disconnected as others have said
Sooo I took of the panel and dug in...
Door handle cable WAS DISCONNECTED when I got inside door,
was disconnected from the actuator where cable sheath pops in to the actuator
Not only was the cable not in the cable track, but also the end (which is like a little square clip thing, cut out in middle like it should hook on something)
was also disconnected.
I bought a new cable to install, just incase the old one was stretched or something ($14 + change at my dealer)
Where do I hook the darn thing in?
I can route the cable sheath where it should go in the actuator, and slide the inner cable forward into the actuator, but
but damn I can't figure out where the metal end (inner wire cable) goes--the clip just doesn't catch...sometimes I think it is hooked and then it just pulls loose again.
If I reattach the inner door handle, the whole inner cable is just too loose.
I have removed the inner door handle, but not the exterior door handle or actuator...was hoping I wouldn't have to for this "simple" repair.
I'm worried my actuator actually has a physical broken piece inside,
but I hope not...so now the panel is off and Im driving it around just like before... (btw, my dealer doesn't have an actuator in stock, so I can't examine one or even buy one without ordering
Please help, I'm actually considering taking it to the dealer
(2+week wait, and I'll have to leave it for a whole day...they have been so lame in my experience...)
I'm going to try and attach pictures of what I see in there...wont be until
tomorrow..
Can anyone help me? Everyone else sounded so easy once the cable sheath was routed into the actuator...
Holding my breath and fingers crossed for your replies, thanks
