--In the previous model years it was found that the strut/shock towers in the MINI Coopers were fabricated a little too thin. Consequently everytime a MINI hit a hard bump it would actually damage the shock tower. Over an extended period of time driving over bumpy roads this would shove the shock assembly up into the body and cause the strut tower to mushroom up. This in the long term affects suspension adversely because this is the mounting point at which your suspension hooks up to.
MINI has not done a recall on this even though numerous owners have reported this problem, but there is a solution. Reinforce your shock towers with plates such as those offerred by M7. This will reduce the likelyhood of your MINI being damaged by bad pavement. Hope this helps.
