Does anyone know if a 6spd Getrag will fit into a Cooper without *too* much fabrication? Does the Getrag mount to the same places and mate with the engine in the same location? Since MINI tried to use the R65 Midlands unit first, this seems like a reasonable question.
The Gertag 5 speed would probably be way easier.
I had my Midlands tranny replaced this winter. The axle seal went because of extreme cold.MINI does not see this as a tranny problem, even though the fluid drains from the tranny, and wrecks the tranny, but an axle seal problem. So you get a Midlands, not a Gertag[till they run out of Midlands I guess]Anyway I asked how much to get the Gertag instead of the Midlands. The dealer said full price $3000 CND,but they would do the install under warrenty.Needless to say I have a new Midlands
Astra, is it more work than replacing the transmission would normally be?
Do you know who has the lone known Getrag 6 Cooper?
I've found a deal for one, and have been considering going the turbo route for some time. The tranny is one of the key ingredients to getting reliable turbo power.
Unfortunately, my Bentley manual is on loan at the moment.
Well, the point is now moot. It was an e-bay auction that I was excited about because the part was (relatively) local.
I appreciate the replies. I had been wondering about this since just after buying my Cooper.
I've heard conflicting reports on the matter, but the Brits seem to have thought the Getrag was overkill, even for the S. When original production began, they believed the R65 Midlands unit would be just fine.
With that in mind, I've been wondering about just replacing the drive axles with the MiniMania "beefed-up" axles (I've finally gotten contact info for the actual manufacturer, and I'll be calling them shortly for specific details) and some forged pistons and rods. Again, my manual is AWOL, but I seem to recall the bore and stroke are the same between the Cooper and the S.
Couple the rods, pistons, and Schrick cam with one of those fancy "remote turbos" (to move a tiny bit of weight to the back of the car), and I just might have myself a little monster.
All of that, of course, with CF bonnet and quarter-panels.
CF Bonnet for the MC w/o scoop? Is one even available?
I've been searching high and low. There are shops to which I could take my car, and they would make a cast of my bonnet. There's even one within 60 miles, but it would be cost prohibitive if others weren't also interested. The S bonnet will fit, but I wouldn't be thrilled about it.
I'm actually putting a Getrag 6 speed in my bone stock 2003 MC right now. It's expensive, and a lot of work, but not to crazy if you can find all of the right parts. The transmission matches up perfect, but you need new axles, and a load of other things to make it work. I'm definatly assuming I'm gonna want to go turbo after I put this in though. I'll update when I'm done. -only trying to find one more part.....
Check out the 5-to-6 speed how-to from Texas Motorwerks...there's a link here somewhere. I went from a CVT to a 6-speed, so if yours is already a manual, you're way ahead!
I've already done the swap, that how-to really helped. I'm just having an issue with the RH axle. The one I bought didn't come with the carrier/bearing assembly, and I am now having trouble figuring out why my old one doesn't fit, or where to get one. I can't even find any axles online anymore, and I'm trying to avoid going to the dealer.
