Oil filter canister

I have read that when changing the oil, the oil filter canister can be a pain to rethread, and is basically a stamped sheet metal part with a seam.

Has anyone made a billet or cast replacement that solves these problems? Seems like a natural.

Actually, the canister is a cast aluminum affair, rather tidily machined. It's mostly a pain to rethread because the way the filter cartridge sometimes seems to want to tip the canister from perpendicular when reinstalling. It also does not help that two sections of the thread is 'flatted' or missing (a consequence of the die casting process).

I have found that if the canister is being uppity in rethreading, rotating the filter in the housing in 90 degree increments and retrying will often help getting it to line up.

Takes me a few tries, but I just completed my 3rd oil change and have it down pretty well. Easiest method is to place the canister in there and then start threading it counterclockwise (so that you're actually backing it out, not tightening) until you feel it "click" or fall into place, then gently start to tighten it, making sure that it's tightening evenly all the way around.

I agree on the backwards approach. Also be sure to press that filter down into the canister before you start. If it's not popped on correctly, you will have a devil of a time trying to get the canister on.

Thanks for info. Also, I bought a Fumoto valve for the pan. Any comments on this accesssory? I have the kind with the nipple, because I will be fitting a skid plate, and was told that it can be a mess unless you have a hose to direct the draining oil. Is this a deal where you leave the hose on 24/7, or just attach it when doing an oil change?
