PS fan won't shut off can I disconnect it?

I recently had my clutch replaced. A few miles down the road now and my power steering fan won't shut off. My car is a 2006 regular Cooper and with 140,000 miles.

A couple questions. Is it possible the mechanics did something like forgot to hook up a wire or something?

Assuming it is just a coincidence and it was time for it to go anyways, can I just disconnect the fan in for a month or so until I can afford to buy a new pump?

Right now I am disconnecting the battery when I am not driving because it drains pretty fast.

Any other solutions or work around? I'm going to assume I just need to replace it but financially can't afford to have this moment.

Any reason not to just disconnect it and let The pump fry since I am replacing it anyways?

Well it turns out it must be the power steering unit itself that won't turn off because when I turn the steering wheel it affects the sound. I guess I can't exactly turn that off :-). Plenty of info on here tells me that I am screwed and just need to replace it.

Since my car is a 2006 I assume the recall does not affect me?

Call your local MINI dealer, give them your vin# and ask them to check about the PS warranty extension. If you don't have one, contact MINI and ask for assistance.

Thanks, I am going to do that. I bought my car in early February 2006 and I vaguely recall getting a notice about it a year or two ago and not paying much attention to it but then again that could just be wishful thinking. I will let you know what they say.

You need the fan to cool the PS pump otherwise that fails.
I forget the details but the relay or the fan control mod fails, stays on then burns out then the p/s pump overheats then fails. Get is addressed asap to save the pump

Sounds like the pump is getting hot ( maybe low on fluid ) and triggering the Fan or the fan is just staying on and is bad.

Also the P/S fan runs all the time if your run the A/c all the time.

More info here:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ering-fan.html

P/s pump and fan recall info :

I would also inspect the wiring to the P/S fan and Pump as they run on the back side of the engine. Possible he bumped something when they did the transmission.

Thanks for the advice really appreciate the time and info!

I really think it was the pump itself because it changes when I turn the wheel regardless of whether or not the key is in or the car is on.

I have some good news a couple days ago it just stopped happening. It hasn't happened since. Everything appears to be fine now. From other posts I have read here it seems like it could be some buildup or some dust or debris got in there and maybe just broke free or something.

You are welcome, you can clean out the fan , it can get dirt in between the fan blade mount and the motor, there is a small gap and dirt and slat can lodge in there and the fan can stick, some people take the fan out flip it over and blow out the dirt while turning the blade.

If you can spin it with your finger and break it loose , its sometimes good.

Thanks for the update , you have the links above .
