Brake Pedal "clap"

My brake pedal makes an audible "clapping" sound each time I let off the pedal. I have owned many cars in my life and have never had this sound coming from the pedal.

Do all Mini's have this clapping sound when taking your foot off the brake pedal quickly?

Is it the pedal or your foot setting down next to the pedal? I was driving with somebody and they asked me what that clapping noise was whenever I shifted (I have a manual)...it was my foot moving from the clutch to the floor after shifting. Probably not your issue, but that's what these forums are all about.

I have automatic, and it's when at a stop light, brake depressed and then letting off quickly when switching to gas pedal. There is a very audible clank or clapping sound for lack of a better term.

It's kind of annoying so I just want put some feelers out there to know if this is a normal thing for Mini's. Have only had the car for a month, R56.

Yes, oldkid. I have this same problem. I have been trying to google it, but I haven't had much luck. I even took it to the dealer for this issue, but they did not find anything to be wrong with the car.

P.S. I've been lurking on this website for a while, and this is my first post. Hello NAM!

Could you take a video of the sound and then put it up on YouTube or similar?

I notice the same clapping noise on my Countryman when I take my foot off the brake pedal abrubtly(quickly). If I slowly remove my foot, the noise doesn't happen.

Never heard it in my car, could just be the stereo is cranked up too loud or the RFT's are howling and drowning everything out.

I guess I'll just turn up the HK stereo and make some background beats with the brake pedal.

Good to know that this is "normal" for all Mini's.

It must be normal because I hear it as well and it is kind of annoying. The sound you're hearing after you take your foot off the brake pedal is the return spring pulling on the pedal. The brake pedal is just lazy at returning to its proper position sometimes, it happens more if you're using the clutch. The reason you don't hear it when releasing the brake pedal gradually is because it taps on your foot and doesn't make that noise. When i first noticed it I thought my master cylinder was going bad.

Our 2016 Countryman does this, and it's quite annoying. (It has around 3,000 miles on it.). Has anyone figured out a way to dampen it (with something like a strategically placed felt or rubber padding)? Will it eventually go away? Or do I need to just get used to this? We have two MINIs, and our other R53 doesn't make this noise.

I think I know what you are talking about. Yes its normal. I once saw a tech replace 2 pedals a brake booster and had engineers comedown to take a look. Its normal. I think he even tried messing with the firewall. That's just how it is.

When I drive my 'normal' way I have a sound. When I make an effort to take my foot straight up off the pedal I don't make a sound. I've decided it must be the sole of my foot ware rubbing against the pedal when I slide my foot off the pedal.

If it's a moderate noise its normal.

My 2011 MCS has the same sound when letting off the brake pedal abruptly. Like when getting back to the loud pedal after a shift! I kinda like it. Reminds me of the "good old days", when sports cars were not so refined.
