Clunk in rear and visible amounts of toe.

Hey guys,

Recently Minerva, my R53, started making a pretty loud clunk while going over bumps. You can visibly see a bit of toe on the drivers side rear wheel. I have an aftermarket 19 mm rear sway bar, but bushings are fine in it. I jacked the car up and started yarding on the wheel to see if there was any play in it, but there's none. At this point I'm pretty stumped as to what the issue could be. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for reading,
Kyle.

There are only a few bushings in the rear. The control arm bushings you should be able to see pretty easily. I would have thought if you're getting a clunk that you would be able to reproduce it fairly easy moving it with your hands. The bushing in the trailing arm where it attaches to the chassis is a little harder to see but they do tear so that could be going bad. Sorry that's not much help. Kind of hard to diagnose without seeing the car.

If you drive it like that at best you will eat a tire or two. At worst you will crash your car. Get your MINI into a shop that knows MINIs. Something is certainly out of whack.

Good luck

I'll check the bushings tomorrow morning. When I jacked my car up I heard a loud clang come from my car. I forgot to include that

Also check the upper rear strut mount. Over time these can ware and clank over bumps.

There is a rear tailing arm bushing from Powerflex. If you find one bad and want to upgrade.

There is a pre 5/2003 and post 5/2003 bushing.

I would also check the rear upper strut bushing as then tend to deform over time and cause a clunk noise. There are a couple options.

Guide Support / Rear Shock Mount - Left Part # 33526754123

Foam mount with plate ( encase the plate is rusted bad).

Or just the foam insert part.

There is also the Powerflex version of this in Performance and Race:

If you need any other Powerflex items , let us know as we now carry the full line.

Thanks

You will have to check the rear end links to rule that out. Make sure they are tight ( nut to end-link and sway bar) also if the have play or damaged. . Then look at the upper mount. If the rear toe is out or wearing bad, it might be that upper rear strut mount. When the foam losses its ability to dampen, it deforms a bit ( over time , it a hard foam bushing ) then there is a small gap, over large bumps you will here the clink when the suspicion travels all the way up and down. Part pics and number s/ diagrams above.

Thanks

From what I can see their is no toe and it does it when I hit bumps while driving I can also get it to do it when I bounce the car when you say check the end links what exactly are you meaning like the sway bar links? All this happened in one day it was fine then just started could it be the shock? If I get it up on a lift will i be able to move the stuf around or is it just looking and seeing what is out of place?
