'06 Cooper S Power Steering Issues

All, I have read through some of the threads regarding power steering failures on first generation Minis. Quite a log book of the problems and the remedies. I have also noted the posting of the Corporate letter of May 2013 extending the warranty of some, but not all, year groups.

I am interested in finding out if the problems existing in the 2002 through 2005 MCS models is also a prevalent issue in the 2006 MCS? My MCS, which was ordered in July 2006 and delivered in September 2006, has 38,400 miles driven and the power steering pump failed last week. If Mini Corporate covered most of the first generation Minis with this same issue, why aren’t all first gens covered?

I think there was an update for 2006 to protect the cooling fan from road debris. This may have reduced the failure rate so MINI thought they could get away with not including 2006+.

Believe there was an update on the pump in early 2005. The fan grille came in earlier, ( think 10/2003 ) then that and when you get a new fan and mount it comes with the grille. Your 2006 should have the fan grille unless its an auto 1/2005+ and it has the air channel tube ( which people add on security ). Check the Fan first and make sure its not seized or anything, check fuses, then go to the pump connection on top, then the pump itself. Sometimes if the grille is damaged and pushes us it can lock the fan, or plastic bags can get in there it the grille is not present.

Here is the recall for earlier MINIs.

For the newest Fan. #9

For just the fan itself , if you have the grille or the newer auto with the tube.

And the pump itself: #1

It uses CHF 11s only in the system:

Thanks Aspen and ESCTuning for the replies. My '06 has the six-speed automatic. Will have to dig into this more.
