Rebuild or replace engine

Well its looking more likely that I am burning oil and just wondering whats popular new motor or rebuild. Its to bad I just got the car set up where I like it and now, Its my wifes car and only has 75,000 miles. I havent looked any further into the problem because I cant find someone I trust to work on it. everytime I take it in they work on something else and not the problem. Is it more common for the topend valves to go bad or lower rings.

I ended up doing both.
The first rebuild didn't go right so I had the dealer install a new JCW engine kit

Be very careful with who you choose if you decide to rebuild it; it's a lost art, and not everyone has the skills to do it right.

If you are in Canada, I have a spare W11 for an R53 for sale cheaper than importing one.

How much oil are you burning? Mini's in general are known to be oil hungry. As my dad once told me (a LONG time ago), the cost of a new engine buys a LOT of oil. In other words, would you rather spend $6k now, or $5 every few weeks.

If it's just oil consumption, I would do the rebuild myself assuming you own some tools. Disassemble to remove the pistons, deglaze the cyldiners, replace the rings, all seals and gaskets. Maybe the timing chain components depending on condition. A rebuilt short block is not a bad idea, but there is a huge cost difference. Any reputable shop can do this, but the dealer would be the most expensive.

Unless it us knocking....
Drive it till it blows....
Many mini's burn about 1 quart per 1000 miles, and some go 2x that.....
If it is a s mini...I would look at the turbo...seals can leak...causing oil consumption.....as can pcv issues....
You can get a factory rebuilt motor or a used one.....doing a diy rebuild or paying someone to do it IMO is iffy...the parts from mini are $$$....so generally not doable on a cost basis....

Its definatly burning oil. Whats a quick method for checking turbo seals. I just replaced the valve cover for oil consumption because there is a noticeable amount of oil in the turbo inlet an hoses. So much for the valve cover. Still lots of oil in hoses.
