Sputtering, won't start, P0456

So here is the problem.
I drove home from work and start going up the hill when the car's acceleration hesitates a little and than starts to sputter, I check the fuel gauge and it is on the last bar so I figure maybe it is low on gas. I get it gassed up and go home, just a little sputtering but not as bad as before. The check engine light is on also. When I get home I turn it off and get ready for my softball game. The car is sitting in the driveway for about an hour, I try and start it but it won't start, like gas is not getting to the engine. Hesitates, sputters and dies out. The code I got was a P0456, I check the gas cap and it seems to be fine, not sure what the problem is. Any ideas? Thanks.

code is for a small evap leak, will not cause ANY engine problems. Running low on fuel can kill a fuel pump, both pickup and HPFP or clog a fuel filter with junk in the bottom of tank.

So do you think my fuel filter needs to be changed? or my fuel pump is dead? Not sure what to do now since I can't move the car.

I just noticed your a 2005 , I don't know if you have a HPFP , sorry about that , I'm more familiar with 2007-2013 models. Fuel filter is a cheap try but fuel pumps get cooled by the fuel around them and if your empty they can overheat.

You should be able to hear the fuel pump start up when you turn on the key. Have someone listen outside the car near the back when you turn the key. Could also be a clogged fuel filter, but less likely. Change the filter is a bit of hassle but doable. There are detailed instructions on this site.

So my mechanic says my fuel pump isnt work and will need to change it. How long are the pumps usually good for? I have a little over 130,000 miles.

Some pumps die, some last forever. 130k miles is a reasonable life, but it would be nice if they lasted longer.
