I called Alexander MINI and asked about this and they said that MINI is coming out with it in 2 months. SO I guess they are still not doing the Recall as of now

Our MCS ('07 with 32k miles) will be going in next week. I can't get the dipstick to go back in and the only explanation is that the guide is busted. Dealer said he will go to bat for us given the very low mileage. We'll see what they say with respect to how much they may cover given the imminent recall/campaign/whatever.

My chain and tensioner were changed under warranty about 15,000 miles ago at about 24,000 miles. It's holding up well, if we get an extension on the warranty that will be good news indeed.

Assuming this applies to the base Coopers as well, what are the symptoms of a bad timing chain?

Loud rattle at startup. Chain slapping around the valve cover area..

Great video showing the sound... and the replacement process.

this is good news....i am having ever so slight noises coming from up front nothing crazy but its been in the back of my head since i bought mine...would really feel more comfortable having this potential issue resolved so i can have many more enjoyable motoring miles

hell had the hpfp issue the very next day after picking my car up (bought on a sunday zipped around with no issues next morning it stalled twice then idled like **** before smoothing out ) luckily they took care of it at no cost ..

Until it is announced, we are no closer than we have been. I don't doubt that the campaign is coming, but MINI won't announce it until they are ready with the letters to owners, and the dealers are in the loop on how to process the claim etc.

Until then, take very good care of your MINI. Save all your receipts and correspondence with repair shops and dealerships. You just might be able to be repaid for your out of pocket expenses when this comes true.

Extending our warranty would be great for sure. Even though mine had been replaced, I am at 104,000 miles so I would like to eek out some more under warranty if I could.

I had my timing chain components replaced about 1000 miles ago, but only had to pay a $200 dollars deductible on my extended through MaxCare. Lets hope I never need another timing chain replaced again!

From what I've read, it's largely affected the 07-10 S models, since in 2011 MINI started using the new N18 engine rather than the N14 engine. I haven't heard too many issues with the new N18's timing chain, at least nowhere near the extent of the N14's chronic problem.

will be curious to see if my third party warranty goes after mini for reimbursement. Had it done within 800 miles of purchasing mine.

(It is my understanding that MINI is extending the warranty of the timing chain like they extended the warranty of the HPFP.) My SA said this has not been advertised, yet, but they are now doing the repairs. I confirmed with my SA that the entire timing chain cassette will be replaced.

I am simply relaying what I just learned and am sure more details will come.

If your timing chain is failing, CALL MINI NOW!!!

I suspect an Extended Warranty is what will be offered, not a recall, gambling that it will cost less (cheaper to fix a few thousand trashed engines than to replace 100,000 timing chains).

I finally brought my 07' MCS (45K miles) in last week because of the dreaded rattle. It turned out to be the timing chain. Ralph Schomp Denver said an announcement would be coming out soon and that they got permission from Mini to cover it under warranty. Glad I have a good dealer to work with.

How can you still be under the factory warranty with an 07 MCS? It's been longer than 5-years...

My bad choice of words. It wasn't fixed under warranty, but it was fixed without cost to me. Though the dealer didn't call it a recall. Just said Mini would be making an announcement soon.

That is great news!

I just called Mini of St. Louis and was informed that they do not have any official information on it yet, though it seamed that they knew what I was talking about. If replaced now it would be an out of pocket expense.
