Has anyone taken the rollup screen out of their sunroof? My somehow jammed this morning and I managed to tear it trying to unstick it. So now I am looking at replacing the part ($250 on real oem). Do you attack this by taking out the sunroof glass or by dropping the headliner? Any guideance or help would be appreciated. The car is out of warranty so I am not going to take it to Mini to fix it.

Damn - that sucks! Please post up how you fix this.

 

Installing a new sunroof shade is quite simple.

Remove the glass -- there are 3 T25 Torx Screws on each side.
Place glass in a safe area so it doesnt get scratched or damaged.

You will see the location of the roller tabs, on each side of the sunroof - these just "clip" on and off. Use a screwdriver or flat-tip plastic wedge to remove them.

Slide the old/broken shade off the rails and insert the new one.

The plastic tabs "click" back into place.

Install and adjust the glass.
Adjust it by tightening(not all the way - you need the glass to move up and down on the ends) the center screw.

Now push down on the front end of the glass from outside and push up on the rear end of teh glass from inside - having a helper helps in this situation.

Tighten the screws while holding the glass in position.

What you want is for the glass to be tilted on the rear ean "Up" in order to help it open when in the hot weather.

Joey, if you're still on this thread, would you kindly expand on this information a bit? I have 2 problems--sticking sunroof, plus torn screen. The roof itself is a lube problem, according to the dealer, but they wanted $500 to remove and lubricate. And then I moved to an area that doesn't have a dealer yet (one is due to open next spring). Before I moved, I did have it diagnosed, and it is NOT an electrical problem, just lubrication.

So, first question is, when the glass is out to do the screen, is this when you can get to what needs to be lubed and what would you use?

Second question relates to the screen itself, and I have a confession to make here. The screen pulled out on each side, so I glued it. Except that I accidentally glued it to the wrong thing, and it no longer rolls up. In fact, it won't slide, either. I thought I just had to glue the fabric to the underside of the black strip, but duh...well, you get the idea. How hard/expensive will the strip replacement be (as well as the screen), if the roof is out at the same time, or should I just forget about it and not fix anything? I plan to replace the car within the next year or so, and can get the roof up if I push up through the screen and give it a boost.

Your thoughts, and try not to snicker. Hubby will get the job, or I'll try to take it back to my original dealer in Houston.

I should mention this relates only to the front roof of the R56.

One side of my screen came unglued / unattached from the guide and just flops around. Now that I see pics of the new replacement, I wonder if it could be glued back onto the guide.

Any thoughts?

 

No. I tried it, and you'll either glue it totally shut, or it won't roll up. BTW, when you replace it, if you plan to keep the car for a while, you might as well replace both front and rear at the same time. Chances are you'll be needing the other one soon as well.

The rear shade...I dont think Ive ever touched that rear shade to be honest! Is there one back there? Oh boy.

 

Yes, there's one back there. It closes toward the front, opposite the front shade.

 

Man I have never touched it which likely means its intact but I will check before I order.

I don't know why you'd have leaks. The original screen is just fabric, after all, and isn't part of the weatherproofing. On the other hand, if you glued what is essentially a fabric patch (if I understand what you're considering), you won't be able to fully enjoy the sunroof. Why not just bite the bullet and do it right--preserves resale value, too. My '07's screen lasted 6+ years before I had to replace it, so it's not a frequent repair item.

 

I meant the leaks because the sunroof's glass have to be removed first.
Well, I'm using easy shade to block the sun, but I need a new one and I think it is better to just block the net itself.

 

Are you sure the sunroof has to be removed? I don't know, because mine was removed for a totally separate issue, and I elected to have both repairs done at the same time. Either way, you wouldn't be using the shade (or a piece of fabric) as part of the weatherproofing. Incidentally, placement of the sunroof cassette is a bit touchy. I went to an independent shop (who had a MINI/BMW certified mechanic), and it still took a few visits before the wind noise was totally fixed. A number of the '07s had horrible problems with noise until the glass was properly aligned.

When I first drove away from the shop after the roof was reinstalled, it was fine until I got on the freeway. At 60mph it suddenly started howling unbelievably loudly. I called them and told them it sounded like I was pulling the legs off a cat. When I got back to the shop they wanted to know how I would know what that would sound like.

 

In the above description, you must remove the glass (not the all sunroof) in order to take the screens out.

Those are the problems I want to avoid... I guess it's better to stay with the "easy shade".

Currently I don't have problems with the sunroof (no leaks and no noise).

The real deal is to fit the sunroof back so it will be sealed and have a perfect look (same height as the ceiling).

Now I'm looking for premium fabric to install instead of the original 'net'.

1. White/off-white or black to fit the interior.
2. Sun/UV block
3. Thin enough.
4. Should give a luxurious feeling.
5. Should I use a vinyl fabric or sunbrella/canvas like?

I noticed the BMW X1 has some sort of fabric for its sunroof.

 

Some fabric speaker mesh maybe from a speaker supply store ? Good luck on the mod.

 

I know this thread is fairly old at this point, but can anyone confirm if this part will fit a 2013 Paceman S (R61). My front screen won't roll, is starting to tear when I try to "encourage it", and I'm obviously out of warranty.

I did it back then by my self.
I Bought a uv protected fabric on EBAY, black, thin, flexible and just glued it onto the net from above (after taking the sunroofs glass off).
