Regardless, the manufacturer should stand by it's product, I believe that was my point.
Please calm down, I'm only stating the obvious here. I'm sorry that you regret not doing any research before buying, but I hardly see me pointing that out as being rude. I can provide multiple links to threads regarding the timing chain issues if you would like, they start in 2007 with only 1500 miles on the odometer. Not knowing where on this Earth you reside I can only tell you that in the US there have been campaigns by Mini/BMW, not recalls as they aren't the same thing.

So your 45,000 miles past you're warranty and you expect any car manufacturer to fix it and stand by their product, really?

Intermittently I hear timing chain noise when the engine is cold (i.e. 8 hrs unused in minimally heated garage). Very noticeable noise but I park in underground garages which really reflects/amplifies the noise so I can hear it easily (and I usually have a window open when driving through the garage). Part of the problem I find is the MINI engines are really noisy engines to begin with when running perfectly!

Anyways, after a minute or less of light driving the noise is gone. Have tried to record the noise but when I have time/remember to record, engine is fine.

In any case I have another last ditch dealership visit next week. I have arranged to leave the car overnight so they can check in the morning when the engine is cold. Since the warranty is up in a week or so (4 years old! Relatively low 60,000km so far), I want to be very sure the chain is still within spec.

I don't fully trust this dealership... rear sway bar bushings were replaced after second complaint... same for the front bushings this year. So maybe two complaints about timing chain will result in a warranty repair?
I'm interested to hear what your dealer say about the timing chain.
My wife's 2012 MCS timing chain start getting loud and it has only 32000km on it.

Don't let them wait till something happens, they need to be proactive and measure the chain slack and record the measurement, if they are unable to tell you of the measurement then you know that they didn't measure it. If this happens go to an indy shop at get it documeted because they might be stalling till your warranty is up. There is good reason never to trust Mini dealerships, as a company their crooks!

So I ask them to specifically to check the timing chain and I end up with a new tach gauge. hmmm.

Oil change was also done. The stock MINI oil dip stick is so crummy (for the life of me I can't read it well - tried many NAM forum walkthroughs), I have no idea if oil level is now higher than previous. In any case, the car is running like a top today. I think it's time for a CravenSpeed dip stick.

The "warranty manager" was handling my case today due to short staff and she indicated they have only replaced two timing chains. She also tried to re-assure me that if the noise returns after warranty, record it and they should have me covered - I already have two service visits for the complaint... and several parts are on back-order to be installed post-warranty anyways. That discussion was all verbal so I took it with a grain of salt.
I doubt their claims that only two timing chain were done at that dealership, my local dealership does on average three timing chain replacements per week and sometimes more. That just tells you how widespread the problem really is all because of a part that costs $25 to manufacturer that wasn't made correctly until 8 years later, Mini switch manufacturers quite a few times on the tensioner, HPFP ect. Finely when it was too late in 2013 Mini contracted Bosch to manufacturer the HPFP, a little too late! It takes Mini/BMW too long to make a fix for a design flaw, because they seem to go into denial that there's a problem at all! Look how long it took them to come out with a fix for the oil control solenoid, started in mid 2011 and here we are in late 2015.

Solved! Class action lawsuit info

https://www.forthepeople.com/class-action-lawyers/mini-cooper-timing-chain-lawsuit/

Old thread but I found it helpful and wanted to contribute
Looks like they'll cover the cost of a replacement tensioner AND cover any related engine repairs. Just called Schomp mini in Denver and it's all covered. Going Dec 2nd.
