Turn Signal Turns High Beam On Each Time I Signal for a Turn
Hey all,
In the past month I have been having a problem with my turn signal. Each time I signal left or right my high-beams go on. I am unintentionally flashing the cars in front of me. The signal itself seems to me a little floppy and it must be making the contact connection for the high-beams.
Is there a tweak I can make to adjust the signal so it does not continue to make the contact for the high beams or will I have to replace the actual signal mechanism?
This is a 2004 MC
Thanks!

That worked for a while but the actually lever is loose. A light tap forward on it will turn the high beams on. Sometimes a bump in the road will move the lever enough to turn them on.
Googling and doing more searches on this forum come up with other names for this piece...lever, stalk, wiper/turn switch. So I imagine it will not be fun trying to hunt this part down

$137.88
Anyway, it's part #61311484333 if your car has the on-board computer (push button on top of the ****) or #61311484331 without the button. RealOEM says the list price for a new part is $137.88. A used part from an auto recycler will be much cheaper.

Replacement isn't difficult. The trim plastic above and below the steering column need to be removed but not the steering wheel itself. The switch is attached with one screw.

Should be no problem at all. Switch, stalk, lever -- everybody will know what you're talking about if you say it's for the turn signal.

Thanks. This is very helpful info. I appreciate you taking the time going in to detail. I guess at this point I just need to to determine whether it does need a replacement or if it is something I can fix myself.
Thanks again!

I have seen them in the marketplace here. This is a good candidate for a used part in my mind. Either it works or it doesn't, though yours seems to have worn out. If it is cheap enough especially if it is easy to replace, used may be a good option. If the money difference isn't big, or it is a hard job, I would just pay the man.

I had the same problem as the OP. Took the turn signal assembly off, pried it open, and poked around a bit.
I assumed the spring was worn so I stretched it a bit. Putting the whole mess back together was a real logic puzzle. Once everything was back in place I popped it back into the steering stalk. Fired the car up and checked the turn signals. Working fine now, but don't have high beams anymore. That's good news for the folks that were getting flared every time I would signal right-hand turns. Bad news for me because the deer rut is going on right now and I could use the extra light throw at night.
I ordered a new assembly from Mini Cooper Parts Giant online. Total cost (with 2-day shipping) $147.78.
The parts guy said that the northeast distributor for parts just went bankrupt. BMW, Mercedes, and a bunch of others are scrambling to find alternate shipping sources.
Long story short, I'm stuck with low beams until at least Tuesday next week. Could be worse, I suppose.

I replaced it a month or so ago. About the same price as you mentioned.
It was an easy install except one of the screw threads that holds the lower
steering cover trim up was toast (probably from when the dealer put my alarm
in at time of purchase in 2003!), and I used a slightly larger sheet metal screw
instead of the machine screw to hold it back in.
